Amidst widespread calls for a ceasefire in Gaza, the International Court of Justice (ICJ), situated in The Hague, is set to convene its inaugural hearing in South Africa’s genocide lawsuit against Israel on Thursday. Several nations have expressed their approval of this development. Almost 10,000 of the 23,000 Palestinians who have died as a result of Israel’s attack on Gaza are children. South Africa launched the complaint at the end of December, accusing Israel of genocide and demanding an end to the deadly military campaign. According to South Africa’s 84-page submission, Israel broke the 1948 Genocide Convention, which was drafted in the wake of the Holocaust and World War II. The International Court of Justice (ICJ), the highest UN tribunal, has jurisdiction over South Africa and Israel because both countries have ratified the UN Genocide Convention.
