One of the main tenets of our democracy, the honorable tradition of free and vigorous discussion, is becoming increasingly detrimental.
This tendency has gained more traction in the 2024 elections as contenders at all levels prefer mudslinging to intellectual discussion. News outlets, ideological echo chambers, and social media algorithms all promote their messages.
It’s improbable that recently elected officials and institutions will change for the better, despite our best efforts. For them, the stakes are too high to give up on their plan to appeal to the very antithesis of what President Abraham Lincoln referred to as “the better angels of our nature.”

Even if it may be easy to turn a blind eye, we must not give up; doing so will be just as destructive to democracy as vicious assaults. Concentrating on what we can alter about ourselves is the true answer. The capacity to establish deep, meaningful connections with people is a special gift that each of us possesses. One citizen at a time, we can mend the divisions in our nation if we exercise this power.
