Military announces sentence change
Myanmar’s military authorities have confirmed that former leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been moved from prison to house arrest.
State media showed an image of her sitting indoors with uniformed personnel present. Officials described the move as a sentence adjustment and a form of limited leniency.
Detention since the 2021 coup
Aung San Suu Kyi has been in custody since the military removed her government in 2021. She was later convicted in several cases and received a total sentence of 33 years.
Family questions the announcement
Her son, Kim Aris, has raised doubts about the military’s claim. He said there is no independent confirmation of her condition or location. He also said the released image appears old and does not prove her current situation. He added that he has not had reliable contact with her for years.
Long history of political struggle
Aung San Suu Kyi became a global symbol of Myanmar’s pro democracy movement. She spent many years under earlier military rule, including long periods of house arrest. After political reforms, she led the country’s civilian government starting in 2015.
She also received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991 for her non violent resistance during military rule.
International criticism and controversy
Her international reputation later became more complex. She defended Myanmar at the International Court of Justice over allegations tied to the Rohingya crisis in 2017. That move drew strong criticism from human rights groups and damaged her global image.
