WASHINGTON: On Christmas Eve, NASA’s groundbreaking Parker Solar Probe will approach the Sun at a record-breaking 3.8 million miles (6.2 million kilometers) from Earth.
The seven-year mission of the spaceship, which was launched in August 2018, aims to improve scientific knowledge of our star and assist in predicting space-weather phenomena that may have an impact on Earthly life.
At 4:53 am local time (11:53 GMT) on Tuesday, December 24, it will make its closest approach to date.
The spacecraft would be roughly four yards (meters) from the end zone at that location if the distance between Earth and the Sun is equal to the length of an American football field.
