The magnitude of the Republican setback is seen as a stunning rejection of Donald Trump’s two years in the White House, even though the party of the current president usually has a rough night in these elections.

Here are five reasons why the Republicans lost so many seats, ranging from disgruntled voters to an unpopular president.

Quick Fact

Detail Information
What Happened Democrats won control of Congress in the 2026 US midterm elections.
Location United States
Election Date November 3, 2026
Political Parties Democratic Party and Republican Party
Key Figure US President Donald Trump
Election Outcome Democrats gained control of the House and Senate.
Main Issues Cost of living, Iran war, fuel prices and voter dissatisfaction.
Political Impact Democrats gained greater influence over Congress and federal legislation.

1. Soaring cost of living

Voters in the US have been struggling with the skyrocketing expense of necessities from coast to coast. In crucial races, such rage was evident on the ground. Before the elections, a voter from North Carolina said, “Grocery prices, gas prices, everything’s going up,” adding that she had changed her vote from Republican to Democratic this time.

Fuel and energy prices drove up prices, which rose by 3.7% in the year ending in September. According to official statistics, average US retail diesel prices in early October fell just short of the September record of $6.52 (£4.83) per gallon.

2. Unpopular Iran war

The US and Israel’s conflict with Iran, which began in February, has played a significant role in price increases.

After Tehran essentially blocked the Strait of Hormuz in response, obstructing a vital route for the flow of the world’s oil and LNG, fuel prices skyrocketed.

Since then, US voters have had to pay the price at the gas pump.

The majority of Americans have found the war to be generally unfavorable. Additionally, Maga Republicans thought that Trump’s America First campaign program, which promised that there would be no additional wars, had been breached.

3. Disciplined message from Democrats

Some strong candidates who came across as genuine, particularly in traditional Republican heartlands, contributed to the size and scope of this Democratic wave.

They adhered to a strict message on healthcare access and living expenses.

Additionally, preacher Adam Hamilton and former teacher James Talarico spoke about their religion in ways that resonated in Kansas and Texas, respectively.

Getting “money out of politics, money in your pocket” was a prominent slogan used by former public health officer Abdul El-Sayed, who won Michigan to maintain that seat Democratic.

4. Trump's unpopularity a drag on Republicans

The president was personally responsible for two of the topics that people were most dissatisfied with: the Iran War and skyrocketing costs.

Some of these states that supported him in 2024 were particularly susceptible because his approval ratings with Republican voters had even declined.

In an attempt to energize his fans, he asked voters to see him on the ballot.

Republicans are furious and blame Trump for the midterm loss.
However, some see these findings as proof that Trump’s glitter may be fading after more than ten years as the dominant figure in American politics.

5. Hispanic and black voters shift again

Black and Hispanic voters shifted to the Republican Party two years ago, which helped Trump win handily. In these midterms, that appears to have changed.

In the heavily Hispanic congressional districts near the Texas-Mexico border, Democrats won all three of the House elections.

According to a New York Times study, compared to the 2024 presidential election, majority-Hispanic counties swung more than 22 percentage points against Republican Senate candidates.

According to statistics reporter Jeff Adelson, the shift is greater than that of any other significant demographic group in the nation.
