Because of Djibouti’s close relations to China, a Conservative MP claims he was deported during a visit to the east African nation.
Earlier this month, Tim Loughton, the MP for East Worthing and Shoreham, claimed he was “escorted” to a flight out of Djibouti after being held for more than seven hours.
Beijing placed sanctions on Mr. Loughton in 2021, and he described the experience as “extremely lonely and frightening.”
According to China’s foreign office, the charges are unfounded.
During his 24-hour stay, Mr. Loughton met with the British ambassador in Djibouti.
He claimed that after having his passport examined upon arrival, he was questioned about his actions.
