The Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure) Amendment Ordinance 2024 was passed by the current government a few days ago, but a number of national lawyer organizations have referred to it as a “bad law” because it compromises the independence of the judiciary and the defense of fundamental rights, as The News reported on Sunday.
Following the federal cabinet’s assent on Friday, President Asif Ali Zardari signed the aforementioned ordinance into law. The two leading legal organizations, the Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) and the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), have responded angrily to this development.
The subclause 1 of Section 2 of the Act, which states that the Practice and Procedure Act Committee would schedule the cases for hearing, is contained in the ordinance in question.
