In a speech in Paris on Friday, one of the senior EU officials called the ongoing conflict in Gaza a “genocide,” escalating her criticism of Israel and denouncing the 27-nation union for its inaction.
“The genocide in Gaza exposes Europe’s failure to act and speak with one voice,” said Ribera, vice president of the European Commission.
Her comments coincide with the fact that senior EU officials have mostly refrained from referring to Israel’s activities in the region as “genocide,” with one spokesman highlighting that the courts should make that conclusion.
Significant differences among EU members have made it difficult for the bloc to resolve the problem; some support Israel while others call for action against it.
