After a week of deadly violence that resulted in the appointment of the nation’s first female prime minister, Nepal’s president, Ramchandra Paudel, dissolved parliament and called for new elections on March 5, his office announced late Friday.
Just hours after Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli was forced to resign due to anti-graft riots organized by “Gen Z” that killed him, Paudel selected former Chief Justice Sushila Karki to govern the nation.
According to a statement from the president’s office, the president “dissolved the House of Representatives… and fixed March 5, 2026, Thursday for the elections.”
Following two days of heated discussions between Paudel, army head Ashok Raj Sigdel, and the protest leaders responsible for the biggest upheaval in Nepal’s history, Karki was selected.
