HONG KONG: The world’s strongest tropical typhoon of the year, Super Typhoon Ragasa, was expected to hit Hong Kong on Tuesday. The city was prepared to close schools and some businesses, and the majority of passenger flights were expected to be suspended from later in the day until early Thursday.
According to the Hong Kong Observatory, Ragasa is getting closer to the shore of China’s neighboring southern Guangdong province, with hurricane-force gusts of up to 220 km/h (137 mph).
By 2:20 pm (0620 GMT), authorities in the financial center are expected to increase the typhoon signal to 8, the third-highest level, which will cause the majority of businesses and transportation services to close. Approximately 700 flights have experienced disruptions.
