Less than 14 hours after forming his new cabinet, France’s new prime minister Sebastien Lecornu resigned on Monday after both supporters and enemies vowed to overthrow his administration, sending French equities and the euro plunging.
His abrupt and unheard-of resignation signaled yet another significant escalation of France’s political turmoil.
President Emmanuel Macron was immediately asked to call a premature parliamentary election by the far-right National Rally.
Lecornu, a close supporter of Macron, appointed his ministers on Sunday following weeks of negotiations with all political parties. Their first meeting was scheduled for Monday afternoon.
