LONDON – Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has described herself as an extension of her uncle, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, in driving the province’s development.

In a media briefing in London, CM Maryam stated, “I am trained by him and learning from the best. I strive to follow his footsteps as my mentor.” She acknowledged the initial apprehensions people had about a female chief minister, noting that Punjab and Pakistan had never seen one before.

“However, the people of Punjab have shown immense support and affection. I have faced no obstacles, and we operate as a united team committed to the province’s progress,” she said.

CM Maryam also highlighted Pakistan’s enhanced global standing following India’s recent military setback. She credited the country’s success to the strategic leadership of Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir and the Pakistan Army.

She praised the Crime Control Department (CCD) Punjab for its efforts in reducing crime and emphasized her government’s welfare programs, including the Kissan Card and doorstep medicine delivery. “For the first time in Punjab’s history, three million residents received Rs10,000 at their doorstep, and 1.5 million families benefit from Rs3,000 monthly through ration cards,” she noted.

Maryam Nawaz is set to travel to Brazil for the COP30 climate summit, where she will showcase Punjab’s flagship initiatives such as Clean Punjab and e-mobility projects. She will also engage with international leaders, including the Vice President of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, the World Bank’s Global Director of Climate Change, and UNDP officials, to discuss climate-resilient regional leadership.
