India is gearing up to start air cargo services with Afghanistan, a move announced during the visit of Afghanistan’s Trade Minister, Al-Haj Nooruddin Azizi, to New Delhi. The newly activated air freight corridors on the Kabul-Delhi and Kabul-Amritsar routes are expected to commence cargo flights soon, said Indian Foreign Ministry official Anand Prakash.
Azizi’s five-day visit focuses on strengthening economic ties, with special attention to agricultural exports. Key discussions include expanding Afghanistan’s exports to India, enhancing India’s exports of pharmaceuticals, machinery, and textiles, and creating reliable transport routes via air cargo links and Iran’s Chabahar Port. Officials are also looking at restoring payment channels disrupted after Afghan banks lost access to SWIFT and reviving the India-Afghanistan Air Freight Corridor.
This initiative follows Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi’s recent visit to New Delhi, during which India upgraded its diplomatic presence in Kabul, signaling a new phase of bilateral cooperation. With Pakistan’s land border currently closed due to ongoing tensions, Afghan exporters, particularly fruit traders, face significant losses, making diversification of trade routes a top priority for the Taliban administration.
