LOS ANGELES – It started as a backstage joke. It ended as one of the most talked-about moments in pop culture this year.
Taylor Swift is pulling back the curtain on the spontaneous origin of Travis Kelce’s surprise on-stage appearance during her London Eras Tour stop. The reveal comes from the fourth episode of her new Disney+ docuseries, Taylor Swift: The End of an Era.
The moment occurred during the theatrical transition for her Tortured Poets Department set, where Swift is carried offstage after “dying.”
“I’d thought about it,” Swift admits in the documentary. “If there was ever a point to put Travis in the show, I think this would be the one.” But she was reluctant to ask the Kansas City Chiefs tight end, not wanting to, as she put it, “scare people.”
The idea came to life organically. While talking, Kelce jokingly suggested he could just join her dancers and walk on.
“We were joking about him going up there with Kam [Saunders, a dancer],” Swift recalls. “Then it became very clear that he wasn’t joking.”
Her reaction was one of amused surprise.
“I was like, ‘Oh, wait. You would do that?’” she says. Kelce’s response was immediate and enthusiastic: “Yeah, it would be hilarious.”
With his commitment clear, Swift moved quickly. “I said, ‘If you’re serious, I’ll send your measurements to wardrobe right now. They’ll get you a tux.’ And he just said, ‘Put me in. I’m in.’
