In the city that Beryl Cook called home for over four decades, a major exhibition honors her life and career. The Box, Plymouth is hosting an exhibition called Beryl cook: pride and joy to mark 100 years of her birth.
The free show follows the success of shows held in New York, Los Angeles, and Plymouth where Cook lived for 40 years. It celebrates Cook’s strong connection with Plymouth.
Beryl Cook, a self-taught artist, created over 500 paintings in her lifetime (1926 to 2008). The exhibition includes many of these letters.
The Box describes Cook’s work as cultural storytelling that recorded lives often overlooked by mainstream art.
The exhibition includes around 80 paintings, along with textiles, sculptures and personal archives of sketches, photographs and letters.
