The Botswana Democratic Party (BDP), which had ruled the nation for almost 60 years, was ousted by Duma Boko, who was inaugurated in as the new president of Botswana.
Nine days after his Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) thrashed the BDP at the polls, 54-year-old Boko took the oath Friday in front of thousands of people at the national stadium.
“Our democracy remained intact, untested, and unproven for almost three score years. Together, we put this democracy to the test on October 30 of this year,” Boko stated in a speech.
To applause from the audience, he declared, “I can say with pride—and maybe even a hint of relief—that we have passed this test with flying colors.”
