However, not everyone was as lucky as Carr during the Los Angeles fires, which claimed 29 lives in all. Some of the victims had also disregarded evacuation orders in order to defend their houses, despite authorities' pleas for thousands of residents to go. The goals of Leverkus' group, which the British Columbian government does not formally recognize, underscore simmering tensions between those who enforce evacuation orders and those who disobey them in fire-prone areas. A man in the Village of Clinton was forced to be rescued by wildfire firefighters in British Columbia last week after he refused to leave his burning home. The minister in charge of disaster management in British Columbia reaffirmed in a wildfire update on Tuesday.

US Hotels Fear Weak World Cup Tourism as Bookings Fall Short Tourism expectations fail to match reality US hotels are worried the upcoming World Cup will not deliver the expected tourism boost. Many host cities are reporting lower-than-expected bookings, raising doubts about the event’s economic impact. A report from the American Hotel & Lodging Association shows demand is falling behind forecasts across most locations. The group represents more than 32,000 hotel properties and a large share of franchised hotels in the United States. Conflict between booking data and ticket sales The association says hotel demand does not match FIFA’s claim that over five million tickets have already been sold. It warns that the expected financial gains from the tournament could be lower than projected. Accusations over hotel room block bookings The report also criticizes FIFA for reserving large numbers of hotel rooms in advance. According to the association, this created artificial demand and pushed prices higher in early stages of booking. Later, FIFA cancelled a significant portion of those reservations. Hotel operators say this left gaps in availability and disrupted normal pricing patterns. FIFA has rejected these claims and does not agree with the criticism. Other factors behind weak demand Hotels say several issues are discouraging visitors. High ticket prices for matches are one concern. Expensive local transport and taxes are also adding pressure. Some operators also point to political tensions as another reason international travel interest has slowed. Economic outlook remains uncertain With lower bookings and mixed signals from ticket sales, the hospitality sector is now unsure about the World Cup’s overall economic benefit. Many hotels are preparing for weaker-than-expected revenue during the tournament period.

Trump and Modi Announce Major US-India Trade Deal, Slashing Tariffs and Ending Russian Oil Purchases

In a significant diplomatic breakthrough, former US President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have announced a comprehensive new trade agreement. The deal, finalized during a phone call between the two leaders, aims to reset a strained economic relationship and marks a major shift in global trade alliances. Key Terms of the Historic Agreement The agreement centers on mutual concessions. The United States will dramatically reduce its tariffs on Indian goods. Previously, US tariffs on Indian imports stood at 50%, the highest for any Asian nation. Under the new deal, these will be lowered to 18%. Notably, a 25% penalty tariff linked to India’s purchase of Russian oil will be completely eliminated. In return, India has made substantial commitments. Prime Minister Modi agreed to reduce its own trade barriers and non-tariff obstacles to zero for US goods. Furthermore, India will stop purchasing Russian oil, pivoting instead to buy significantly more energy from the United States and potentially Venezuela. India also committed to purchasing over $500 billion worth of American goods, including energy, technology, agriculture, and coal products. Strategic Timing and Global Context This announcement comes less than a week after India and the European Union sealed their own landmark trade deal, ending nearly 20 years of negotiations. Analysts view the swift US-India pact as a strategic move by Washington to maintain its influence. Terry Haines of Pangaea Policy called it "an answer to those thinking the EU is flanking or gaining speed on the US on trade." The US-India trade relationship had been under severe strain since August, when the high US tariffs caused Indian exports to America to plummet. India had been actively seeking other partnerships in response. Reactions and Market Implications Prime Minister Modi expressed delight at the agreement on social media, thanking Trump "on behalf of the 1.4 billion people of India." He emphasized the benefit of the world's two largest democracies working together. While markets are expected to react positively, not all responses are favorable. A coalition of 800 U.S. small businesses, "We Pay the Tariffs," criticized the deal. Their director noted that pre-tariff rates were around 2.5%, meaning the new 18% rate "locks in a rate six times higher than what we were paying a year ago," calling it a "permanent tax hike." The deal represents a fundamental realignment, strengthening US-India ties while pulling New Delhi away from Russian energy dependence. It sets the stage for a new chapter in trans-Pacific trade and geopolitics.

Under the new terms, the U.S. will drop the Russia-linked surcharge and reduce overall tariffs on Indian imports to 18%. In return, India has agreed to eliminate its own tariffs and non-tariff barriers on U.S. goods, effectively opening its vast market to American exporters.

A $500 Billion Pledge and an Energy Shift

A cornerstone of the pact is India’s commitment to purchase more than $500 billion worth of U.S. goods in the coming years. This unprecedented sum is earmarked for American energy, agricultural products, technology, and coal.

In a significant geopolitical shift, Prime Minister Modi agreed to halt all purchases of Russian crude oil. “He agreed to stop buying Russian oil, and to buy much more oil from the United States and, potentially, Venezuela,” Trump stated in an announcement on his Truth Social platform.

Strategic Timing Follows EU Pact

The breakthrough comes less than a week after India and the European Union concluded their own historic free trade agreement, ending two decades of negotiations. Analysts see the swift U.S.-India deal as a strategic countermove.

Mixed Reactions: Jubilation and Criticism

Prime Minister Modi welcomed the agreement enthusiastically. “Big thanks to President Trump… When two large economies and the world’s largest democracies work together, it benefits our people,” he posted on X.

“This ‘deal’ locks in a rate six times higher than what we were paying a year ago. That’s not relief, it’s a permanent tax hike,” said the coalition’s director, Dan Anthony.

Students have received assurances from the state administration that they would receive justice. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Jharkhand is looking into the claims related to the test. Over a dozen individuals have been taken into custody. Additionally, after candidates questioned the selection process, investigators are looking into the involvement of a private organization that administered portions of the exam. The administration decided to cancel the exam in question and two others after negotiating with demonstrators on Sunday. According to reports, three JPSC members also quit. This followed the resignation of JPSC chairman L Khiangte on July 22. On Monday, he was taken into custody after being questioned during the inquiry. However, demonstrators claim that a number of requests are yet unfulfilled, the most important of which is a probe into the irregularities.
