At least one structure fell in Bolívar Square, the city's principal square. Additionally, there are buildings where trucks and busses are stuck, and many are worried that those buildings may also collapse," he stated. We're all in disbelief. It was truly terrible. However, not everyone was as lucky as Carr during the Los Angeles fires, which claimed 29 lives in all. Some of the victims had also disregarded evacuation orders in order to defend their houses, despite authorities' pleas for thousands of residents to go. The goals of Leverkus' group, which the British Columbian government does not formally recognize, underscore simmering tensions between those who enforce evacuation orders and those who disobey them in fire-prone areas. According to our research, males are drawn to the possibility of financial gain more easily. Female investors "appear more likely to connect investing with real-life goals, from building emergency savings to looking after children," according to Jemma Slingo, pensions and investment specialist at Fidelity International. It's crucial to keep in mind that, due to the ongoing gender pay discrepancy, women in the UK often have less money to invest than men. Investing "needs to do a better job of making investing feel accessible, relevant, and connected to people's own goals and values," according to Macdonald.Women's long-term financial stability and the UK economy would both benefit from addressing this.

US Hotels Fear Weak World Cup Tourism as Bookings Fall Short Tourism expectations fail to match reality US hotels are worried the upcoming World Cup will not deliver the expected tourism boost. Many host cities are reporting lower-than-expected bookings, raising doubts about the event’s economic impact. A report from the American Hotel & Lodging Association shows demand is falling behind forecasts across most locations. The group represents more than 32,000 hotel properties and a large share of franchised hotels in the United States. Conflict between booking data and ticket sales The association says hotel demand does not match FIFA’s claim that over five million tickets have already been sold. It warns that the expected financial gains from the tournament could be lower than projected. Accusations over hotel room block bookings The report also criticizes FIFA for reserving large numbers of hotel rooms in advance. According to the association, this created artificial demand and pushed prices higher in early stages of booking. Later, FIFA cancelled a significant portion of those reservations. Hotel operators say this left gaps in availability and disrupted normal pricing patterns. FIFA has rejected these claims and does not agree with the criticism. Other factors behind weak demand Hotels say several issues are discouraging visitors. High ticket prices for matches are one concern. Expensive local transport and taxes are also adding pressure. Some operators also point to political tensions as another reason international travel interest has slowed. Economic outlook remains uncertain With lower bookings and mixed signals from ticket sales, the hospitality sector is now unsure about the World Cup’s overall economic benefit. Many hotels are preparing for weaker-than-expected revenue during the tournament period.

US Retail Sales Flat During December Holidays

Retail sales in the US unexpectedly remained flat in December, signaling a slowdown in consumer activity. The Commerce Department reported no growth compared with the previous month, following a 0.6% increase in November.

US Retail Sales Flat During December HolidaysFactors Behind Sluggish SpendingTemporary Slowdown or Larger Trend?Spending Divides: Necessities vs. Discretionary ItemsOutlook for Early 2026

This pause comes after several months of strong spending, despite consumers’ growing concerns about the economy.

Factors Behind Sluggish Spending

Experts say several elements contributed to December’s weak retail numbers. Slower wage growth, persistent inflation, and signs of a cooling labor market all played a role.

Several sectors faced a noticeable decline. Furniture store sales dropped 0.9% month-over-month, while clothing retailers saw a 0.7% decline. Overall, sales rose 2.4% year-over-year, down from 3.3% in November.

“Consumer spending has finally caught up with consumer sentiment, and not in a good way,” said Chris Zaccarelli, chief investment officer at Northlight Asset Management.

Temporary Slowdown or Larger Trend?

Economists caution that one month of weak retail data may not indicate a sustained downturn. Upcoming reports on the labor market and fourth-quarter GDP growth could provide a clearer picture of the economy.

Michael Pearce, chief US economist at Oxford Economics, expects a rebound. He cited upcoming tax returns and the effects of the Federal Reserve’s interest rate cuts as potential boosts for spending.

Spending Divides: Necessities vs. Discretionary Items

The retail report highlights a growing gap between higher-income consumers and those facing financial strain. While wealthy households continue to spend, wage growth slowed to 0.7% in the fourth quarter, the slowest pace in more than four years.

Gregory Daco, chief economist at EY-Parthenon, noted that Americans are focusing more on essentials. Gasoline and building material sales rose, while discretionary purchases like electronics and clothing fell.

Outlook for Early 2026

If the labor market remains stable, consumer spending could recover in the spring. Analysts say the slowdown may only be temporary, driven by seasonal shifts in spending priorities rather than deeper economic weakness.

Next Article New Surveillance Footage Released The FBI has shared images of a masked individual in connection with the disappearance of news anchor Savannah Guthrie’s mother, Nancy Guthrie. Authorities say the person was armed and may have tampered with Nancy’s home security camera. FBI Director Kash Patel said investigators recently recovered footage that had been inaccessible due to damaged or removed recording devices. The videos show the suspect approaching the front door, checking the camera, and covering it with vegetation. Family Urges Public Help Savannah Guthrie shared the footage on Instagram, appealing to anyone who might recognize the suspect. “We believe she is still out there,” Savannah said. “Bring her home.” This marks the first significant development in the case, which has drawn national attention since Nancy, 84, went missing from her Tucson, Arizona, home on January 31. Timeline and Evidence Authorities found that the home’s doorbell camera was disconnected at 1:47 a.m., with motion detected at 2:12 a.m. Around 2:28 a.m., Nancy’s pacemaker app lost connection. Blood found on her porch tested positive as hers. The FBI has also offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to her safe return. Ransom Notes and Investigations Officials are taking a recent ransom email seriously, which included a Monday deadline. Previous ransom demands were in Bitcoin, and one hoax note led to an arrest last week. Nancy’s family has said they are willing to pay for her safe return. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that President Donald Trump has reviewed the footage and urged anyone with information to contact authorities. Public Response The case has prompted widespread concern and social media appeals. Savannah continues to share updates, asking the public for help in identifying the suspect and ensuring her mother’s safety.
