UK Investigates Reports of Warning Shots Fired by Russian Warship in the English Channel Incident reported near Isle of Wight and Normandy The UK Ministry of Defence is looking into claims that a Russian warship fired warning shots close to a UK registered yacht in the English Channel. The reported incident took place around 11:40 am BST on Tuesday, in waters between the Isle of Wight and the French coast of Normandy. The Russian frigate involved is believed to be the Admiral Grigorovich. Officials say there were no injuries and no damage reported on the yacht. A Ministry of Defence spokesperson confirmed that the matter is under review and said they are examining reports of what happened in the Channel. Close distance between vessels raises concern Reports suggest the yacht informed British authorities that warning shots were fired from about 500 yards away, which is considered a very close range in maritime conditions. The location was around 20 nautical miles south of the Isle of Wight, outside UK territorial waters. Royal Navy monitoring Russian vessel movements The Russian frigate was already under close observation by Royal Navy ships, including HMS Mersey. It is understood HMS Tyne and HMS Mersey had been tracking the vessel over the weekend as part of routine surveillance after it was seen near Brest, France. Officials say Russian warships regularly pass through the Channel and are monitored as part of standard naval operations. Links to shadow fleet escort activity NATO sources previously indicated that the Admiral Grigorovich had been tasked by Moscow with escorting so called shadow fleet tankers through the Channel. These vessels are linked to the transport of sanctioned oil. The frigate has reportedly been active in the region for several months and has been resupplied at sea by a support vessel identified in satellite imagery as PM 82. This support ship is believed to provide food, water, and supplies, helping extend the frigate’s time at sea. In April, the vessel was also reported to have escorted multiple shadow fleet ships through the Channel while being tracked by the Royal Navy. Officials do not currently believe this latest incident is connected to a recent Royal Marines operation involving the interception of a sanctioned oil tanker in the same region.

Big cat sightings reported across Wales spark debate after multiple unverified claims Reports of unusual big cats across Wales Authorities in Wales recorded multiple reports of large wild cat sightings between January 2020 and July 2025. In total, fifteen separate claims were logged across different regions including Pembrokeshire, Ceredigion, Powys, Swansea, Denbighshire, and Carmarthenshire. These reports came through public submissions, with witnesses describing encounters involving large feline animals in rural and semi rural locations. Panther and leopard sightings reported One of the more striking reports came from a driver who said they saw a large dark cat leap over a hedge and cross the road near Ceredigion. The animal was described as black, muscular, and similar in size to a Labrador dog. The witness later referred to it as a panther after viewing images online. Another report submitted to police in Swansea described a spotted cat resembling a leopard in a private garden. The witness claimed the animal moved through the area while security lights kept activating. The household dog reportedly showed no reaction during the incident. Canadian lynx claim in Carmarthenshire In May 2025, a report from Pont Henri in Carmarthenshire mentioned a possible Canadian lynx sighting. The observer believed they had seen a wild lynx like animal in the area. No physical evidence or supporting footage was provided. Police responses and lack of evidence Law enforcement and wildlife officers reviewed the reports but found no confirmed proof of any exotic big cats living in the wild in Wales. In several cases, follow up contact with witnesses did not lead to additional information. One separate report of a large cat like animal in Denbighshire was investigated and later dismissed after officials concluded the sighting was likely a misidentification. Across all cases, no livestock attacks or verified tracking evidence were recorded. Public interest and ongoing debate Despite the lack of scientific confirmation, public interest in large mysterious cat sightings continues. Rural landscapes and isolated roads often fuel speculation when unusual animal shapes are seen from a distance or in low light conditions.
