An 18 year old participant has died after entering the River Wye during a Duke of Edinburgh Award expedition in Glasbury, Powys. Emergency teams launched a large search operation on Tuesday evening, but later recovered the teenager’s body.
Police said they received reports at about 6:30 pm that a young male had entered the river and could no longer be found. Rescue teams quickly responded and searched the area using several emergency resources.
Authorities confirmed that volunteers from mountain rescue, firefighters, and the National Police Air Service all joined the operation. Despite their efforts, they later found the teenager’s body.
Officials expressed their condolences to the victim’s family and everyone involved in the expedition. They also promised to provide support during this difficult time.
Emergency Response at the Scene
Investigators remained at the riverside late into Tuesday night to document the area and gather evidence. Officers focused on the shingle beach and the section of the River Wye below Glasbury Bridge.
At the same time, police supported the victim’s friends at the nearby Glasbury Scout Hut as they dealt with the tragic incident.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death is continuing.
Popular River Spot
The area, known locally as The Bont, attracts many visitors during warm weather. Families often visit the beach because it offers shallow water for paddling.
However, the river becomes much deeper near and below Glasbury Bridge. These deeper sections are commonly used for swimming, but changing water conditions can also increase the level of risk.
Officials have not released further details about what led to the incident.
