Pope Leo XIV Visits Canary Islands to Highlight Migrant Sea Journeys Pope Meets Migrants in Gran Canaria Pope Leo XIV started his visit to the Canary Islands by meeting migrants in Gran Canaria. He listened to personal stories of people who crossed the Atlantic in unsafe conditions in search of a better life. He told them they are not just numbers or records but real human beings with dignity. He also said he bows in respect to their struggles and survival. Call for Safe Migration Routes During his visit, the Pope spoke about the need for legal and safe pathways for migration. He urged European leaders and societies not to become numb to deaths at sea. He warned that the oceans should not become silent graves for people trying to reach safety. He called on conscience and responsibility in handling migration policies. Tribute at Sea for Lives Lost At the port of Arguineguín in southern Gran Canaria, the Pope paid tribute to migrants who died during their journeys. He placed a wreath of flowers into the sea and prayed in silence. His message focused on remembering those who disappeared without any trace during Atlantic crossings. Dangerous Journey Across the Atlantic Data from the UNHCR shows that arrivals to Spain by sea have decreased this year. This decline is partly linked to stronger patrols along West African waters supported by European funding. Even with fewer arrivals, many migrants continue to attempt the journey. Many still lose their lives at sea. Survivor Story from The Gambia One survivor, Bakary Jaiju from The Gambia, shared his experience of crossing the Atlantic at age 19. He traveled in a wooden boat with around 160 people including women and children. He described a journey lasting seven days with very limited food and water. Fear was constant as passengers risked falling into the sea. Jaiju said he left his family behind because he wanted to improve their living conditions, even if it meant risking his life. Rescue and Life After Arrival When the boat ran out of fuel near El Hierro, Spanish rescue teams found and saved the passengers. After arrival, Jaiju spent three difficult months in a migrant camp. Later, he joined a support program in Tenerife to learn Spanish and work toward legal residence. A local parish priest known as Padre Pepe supports migrants through community programs that help them adjust and rebuild their lives.

Police Detain Man After Dog Abuse Videos Spark Public Anger in Chongqing Authorities in China have detained a man in Chongqing after videos showing severe animal abuse triggered widespread public outrage and online backlash. The suspect allegedly pretended to be an animal lover looking to adopt pets for his children. Instead, he is accused of taking in several dogs and cats and later harming them. He reportedly filmed the abuse and shared the content online for profit. Abuse Allegations Surface Online The case came to light after a woman who had given away puppies for adoption shared her concerns through a friend online. Her story quickly spread across social media platforms, raising alarm among animal welfare groups and local residents. The suspect, identified by his surname Li, had posted adoption requests on Douyin, a popular Chinese social media platform. In his posts, he claimed that he wanted to adopt dogs for free and said his children were very fond of puppies, according to local reports. Protest Outside Suspect’s Home As the allegations spread, public anger grew rapidly. More than 100 people gathered outside Li’s residential building in Chongqing earlier this week. Some protesters carried signs demanding justice and stronger protection for animals. Online videos showed crowds gathered at the location, reflecting the strong emotional reaction from the public. Injured Puppy Found by Volunteers On Sunday, members of an animal welfare group discovered a puppy linked to the case. The animal was found abandoned in the stairwell of Li’s building. It had visible injuries, including a broken limb, a damaged tail, and swelling on the head, according to reports. Investigation Underway Police have detained the man and are investigating the case. Officials have not confirmed the exact charges yet. In China, animal cruelty is not clearly covered under national criminal law, though awareness of animal welfare issues has been increasing in recent years.

Drone Strike Hits Funeral in El Obeid as Sudan War Intensifies Overview A drone strike hit a funeral gathering in a cemetery in the Sudanese city of El Obeid. At least four people were killed and several others were injured. Two rights groups, Sudan Doctors Network and Emergency Lawyers, reported the incident. They blamed the Rapid Support Forces for the attack. The group has not issued any response. Series of Attacks in One Night Emergency Lawyers said the cemetery strike was part of a wider wave of drone attacks that began on Wednesday evening. At least 23 people were killed across different locations during this period. The group also reported strikes on residential homes, an airport area, and zones near a military base. Civilians were among the dead in these locations. In one residential area, several houses were destroyed and people were trapped under collapsed roofs. A local resident told AFP that destruction was severe. He said survival inside some homes seemed unlikely after the strikes. Civilian Casualties Reported Rights monitors said thirteen civilians were killed when people gathered near damaged homes. Earlier strikes killed five more civilians. In another incident, a truck driver carrying food supplies was killed when his vehicle was hit. The attacks in El Obeid have continued for several days, according to Emergency Lawyers and Sudan Doctors Network. Both groups described repeated targeting of civilian areas. Strategic Importance of El Obeid El Obeid lies in the Kordofan region, an oil rich area divided into North Kordofan, South Kordofan, and West Kordofan. The city sits between territory controlled by the army and areas held by the Rapid Support Forces. Because of this location, it has become a key frontline in Sudan’s ongoing civil war, which has lasted for three years. Control of this region is seen as vital due to its oil resources and transport routes. Humanitarian Crisis Deepens The conflict in Sudan has created one of the worst humanitarian emergencies in the world. More than 11 million people have been displaced from their homes. Around 28 million people are facing severe food shortages. Reliable death counts remain unavailable. Estimates suggest at least 50,000 people have died since the war began.
