Iconic Australian BBQ Brand Ends Operations
The well known retail chain Barbeques Galore has shut down after almost five decades in business. The company struggled for a long time and finally failed to secure a rescue plan.
Founded in 1977 by Max Mason, the brand became a popular name for barbecues and outdoor furniture across Australia. Its bright red branding made it easily recognizable in the retail market.
Financial Struggles and Administration
The company entered voluntary administration in February after ongoing financial pressure. Management tried to find a revival deal with landlords and suppliers, but those efforts did not succeed.
In recent weeks, negotiations collapsed completely. As a result, the company confirmed it will wind down operations and sell remaining assets starting from 16 June.
Store Closures and Job Losses
Around 62 company owned stores will begin closing from next week. About 27 franchise operated stores will continue with transitional arrangements for a limited time.
Nearly 500 employees will lose their jobs. However, the company confirmed that all staff will receive their full entitlements and benefits.
Gift Vouchers and Customer Conditions
Customers can still use gift vouchers in stores until the end of June. However, a condition applies. Buyers must spend two dollars for every one dollar of voucher value.
For example, a 50 dollar voucher requires a 100 dollar additional purchase, making the total bill 150 dollars.
Industry Reaction
Analysts described the collapse as a major loss for the Australian retail sector. One expert said the economic environment made recovery extremely difficult for struggling retailers.
The fall of this long standing brand highlights how changing consumer behavior and economic pressure can reshape traditional retail markets.
