Rosamund Pike Addresses Theatre Etiquette After Audience Member Texting Incident in West End Show Actor pauses curtain call moment to speak about distraction during emotional scene Rosamund Pike interrupted the usual end-of-show atmosphere at London’s Wyndham’s Theatre after noticing an audience member texting during a powerful moment in her West End performance of Inter Alia. The incident happened on Saturday during the closing stages of the play. Pike, known for Gone Girl, Saltburn, Pride & Prejudice, and Die Another Day, returned to the stage alone after the performance. Instead of a standard curtain call announcement, she spoke directly to the audience about theatre behaviour and focus during live acting. Emotional moment prompts onstage message During her brief speech, Pike explained that she and the cast could see audience behaviour and feel its impact during performance. She said it becomes difficult to stay fully immersed when attention is pulled away in key emotional scenes. She avoided directly identifying the person involved but made it clear that texting had been noticed in a crucial moment of the play. Her tone mixed frustration with understanding, as she suggested the message might have been urgent and even joked that the person could be a doctor dealing with an emergency. Call for respect in live theatre spaces Pike stressed that live theatre depends on shared attention between performers and audience. She reminded attendees that the story being told on stage requires focus and emotional engagement from both sides. Her comments were not aggressive, but firm, as she encouraged people to treat theatre as a space that deserves full presence. She also asked the audience not to record her remarks. Audience reaction and response The moment drew gasps from the crowd, followed by applause after she finished speaking. Some audience members later described the atmosphere as uncomfortable at first, then supportive of Pike’s message. One attendee said they initially expected a routine announcement but were surprised by her direct address about the texting incident. About Inter Alia and Pike’s role Inter Alia is a courtroom focused drama written by Suzie Miller, exploring themes of justice, family pressure, and sexual assault within the legal system. Pike plays Jessica Parks, a Crown Court judge balancing intense professional and personal challenges. Earlier in the year, Pike received recognition for her performance, winning a major theatre award for the role.

UK Blocks Entry of US Political Commentators After Visa Revocation Key update on visa cancellation Two US political commentators, Hasan Piker and Cenk Uygur, were unable to enter the United Kingdom after their travel permission was withdrawn by the Home Office. Both were expected to appear at SXSW London and an additional event in Oxford. The UK authorities reportedly cancelled their Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), which can be revoked if officials believe a person may pose a risk to public order or the wider public interest. Who was affected Hasan Piker, a Twitch streamer and political commentator, and Cenk Uygur, co founder and host of The Young Turks, both describe themselves as left leaning voices in US political media. They were scheduled to speak at SXSW London, a six day festival in Shoreditch that covers business, technology, film, music, and culture. Reactions and claims Both commentators criticised the decision. Piker claimed on social media that his visa was revoked due to political pressure, while also making strong accusations against Western governments. Uygur has previously described Israel’s military actions in Gaza as “barbaric”. UK officials have not publicly confirmed the detailed reason behind the cancellations. However, a Labour MP, David Taylor, supported the move and said there was “no reason” to allow entry to individuals who he believes promote hate or support proscribed groups. SXSW London response Organisers of SXSW London said they were aware that both speakers could not travel due to decisions made by the Home Office. They added that visa and entry decisions are handled solely by UK authorities.

Voting suspended in Ethiopia election amid security concerns Election overview Voting in Ethiopia’s general election has been paused in parts of the Oromia and Amhara regions because of security risks. Election officials confirmed that some polling stations could not operate safely. Despite this, many polling stations across the country remained open, and long queues of voters were seen in several areas. Security disruption affects polling stations Out of more than 50,000 polling stations set up for the election, 143 did not open due to security problems. Conflict in several regions continues to affect voter access and participation. The northern Tigray region was fully excluded from the vote. The area is still recovering from a civil war that ended in 2022, which has left lasting instability. Political context and voter participation This election marks the seventh national vote since the fall of the military government in 1991. It is also taking place under tight media restrictions, limiting international coverage and reporting access. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who has led the country since 2018, cast his vote and highlighted national progress since the end of military rule. He said Ethiopians are capable of shaping their own democratic system without outside guidance. Kenya’s former president Uhuru Kenyatta observed the election on behalf of the African Union and reported that voting appeared to be running smoothly in many locations. Expected outcome and political landscape Abiy Ahmed is widely expected to remain in power with his Prosperity Party. The system selects members for a 547 seat parliament. The party that wins at least 274 seats gains the ability to form the government for the next five years. Abiy came to power after major protests against the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front, a coalition that had governed since 1991. He later replaced it with the Prosperity Party, shifting the country toward a more centralized political structure.

Kevin Keegan shares stage four cancer diagnosis Overview of the diagnosis Former England captain and manager Kevin Keegan has revealed that he is living with stage four cancer. Stage four means the illness has spread beyond its original site to other parts of the body. His family first shared news of his condition in January after doctors carried out further tests linked to ongoing abdominal symptoms. Those checks followed a hospital visit. How the diagnosis was found Keegan explained that the condition was discovered during medical scans linked to an operation after a car accident. During those scans, doctors identified cancer and referred him to specialist care. He said he was offered a newer treatment plan with a specialist doctor. The treatment has shown mixed success rates, but Keegan confirmed he continues to receive care and remains in treatment. Public appearance and emotional reception Keegan recently made one of his first public appearances since the diagnosis at the Tyne Theatre and Opera House in Newcastle upon Tyne. He received a standing ovation from fans in a deeply emotional return to the city closely linked with his football legacy and his time at Newcastle United. Football career and legacy As a player, Keegan represented clubs including Scunthorpe United, Liverpool, Hamburger SV, Southampton, and Newcastle United. He later became a manager for Newcastle United, Fulham, the England national team, and Manchester City. He remains one of the most influential figures in Newcastle United history, especially for leading the team during the attacking era often remembered by fans. Connection with Newcastle United today Current Newcastle manager Eddie Howe previously reached out to Keegan after taking charge in 2021 to understand the club culture and expectations. Keegan has expressed a wish to return to St James Park to say a proper goodbye, although he has not attended a match there since 2008. The club continues to support him and has sent public messages of care and encouragement, saying he will always be welcome at the stadium. Personal reflections Keegan has said he does not feel the need for a statue outside the stadium. He stated that how fans treat him matters more than any physical tribute. He remains positive about his situation and continues to focus on treatment and time with his family.

A Parallel Inner World: When Daydreaming Becomes Hard to Control What normal daydreaming looks like Daydreaming is a common mental habit. Most people drift into thoughts that are not linked to their current task. Studies suggest a large part of waking thought time is spent in this state. It can support creativity, emotional balance, and stress relief. It also helps people process experiences and handle boredom. When imagination turns into a problem For some people, daydreaming becomes intense and hard to stop. This condition is often called maladaptive daydreaming. It involves long and detailed mental stories that feel almost real. Some individuals spend many hours each day inside these imagined worlds. In severe cases, people may lose up to half of their waking hours in these inner stories. The narratives can continue for years and even feel like ongoing life plots. While the experience may feel comforting at first, it can slowly interfere with normal routines and responsibilities. Why it becomes addictive Experts explain that the issue is not imagination itself but the loss of control over it. The mind begins to return to the same fantasy again and again. Even when people feel it wastes time, they struggle to stop. The process becomes similar to a habit loop. The imagination starts to feel like a safe space, especially for people dealing with loneliness, stress, or social rejection. Over time, the mental escape can become more appealing than real life tasks. Impact on daily life When maladaptive daydreaming takes hold, daily functioning can suffer. People may delay work, avoid social interaction, or lose focus on basic responsibilities. Emotional distress can also appear when they realize how much time has passed inside their thoughts. Some individuals describe the experience as both comforting and frustrating at the same time. They enjoy the stories but regret the time lost. This push and pull makes it difficult to break the cycle. What researchers observe Mental health researchers estimate that a small but significant portion of adults may experience this condition. It is not yet officially classified as a clinical disorder in many diagnostic systems, but it is widely studied. Experts emphasize that imagination itself is healthy. The concern begins when fantasy starts controlling behavior instead of supporting it. Signs it may be becoming harmful Common signs include Spending long hours daydreaming instead of completing tasks Feeling unable to stop even when trying Getting emotionally absorbed in imaginary stories Feeling guilt or frustration after long episodes Preferring imagined scenarios over real interactions Key insight from specialists The main concern is control. Healthy imagination supports life, while maladaptive daydreaming replaces it. When escape becomes the default response to life challenges, it can begin to limit personal growth and daily stability.
