Operation in the Atlantic
France intercepted a sanctioned Russian oil tanker in the Atlantic Ocean on Sunday. The vessel, named Tagor, was linked to Russia’s shadow fleet and was sailing far from the coast near Brittany.
Authorities said the ship was flying a false flag when naval officers boarded it about 400 nautical miles west of Brittany. The operation took place in international waters.
United Kingdom provided support during the mission. A military helicopter helped track and monitor the tanker while French forces carried out the boarding.
France and Allies Tighten Pressure on Sanctions Evasion
President Emmanuel Macron said the operation aimed to stop ships that help bypass sanctions on Russian oil exports. He said such activity helps fund Russia’s war in Ukraine and must be stopped.
French authorities described the action as legal and coordinated with allies. Officials said ships like this often use unclear ownership structures and fake registration details to hide their identity.
UK Military Support Role
The UK Ministry of Defence confirmed that a helicopter from HMS Somerset assisted the French operation. The aircraft helped with surveillance and tracking during the interception.
Keir Starmer has previously supported allowing British forces to help intercept sanctioned vessels linked to Russia. UK officials said these operations aim to disrupt illegal oil transport routes.
Russia Response and Tensions Rise
Russia rejected the seizure and called it unlawful. Kremlin officials described the move as close to international piracy. They also said Russia would take steps to protect its cargo operations.
Russian officials continue to operate what is widely described as a shadow fleet. These vessels are used to move oil while avoiding international sanctions imposed after the invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Growing Crackdown on Shadow Fleet Ships
French authorities said this is not an isolated case. Several similar vessels have already been stopped since late 2025.
Officials added that earlier approaches allowed some ships to continue after fines. However, the policy has now shifted toward stronger enforcement and boarding actions.
Environmental and Security Concerns
Military officials warned that these vessels often ignore basic maritime safety rules. They said this creates risks for shipping routes and the marine environment.
France and its allies say they will continue operations to disrupt the flow of oil revenue supporting Russia’s war effort.
