The Trump administration has announced plans to withdraw 700 federal immigration agents from Minnesota. These officers were part of Operation Metro Surge, a major immigration crackdown launched in Minneapolis late last year. White House Border Czar Tom Homan shared the decision during a press conference in Saint Paul on Wednesday. He said the pullback would start immediately. Federal Presence to Be Reduced Gradually According to Homan, agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the US Border Patrol will be included in the withdrawal. Around 2,000 federal agents will remain in Minnesota for now. Homan explained that the administration wants to return to the staffing level that existed before the operation began in December. He said the decision reflects improved cooperation from state and local authorities. He added that federal officials will continue adjusting the number of agents based on local support and coordination. Body Cameras a National Priority During the briefing, Homan said the government is prioritizing body worn cameras for all officers operating in Minnesota. He confirmed that every federal agent in Minneapolis will receive the equipment. The administration also plans to expand body camera use nationwide. Homan said the move aims to improve transparency and accountability during enforcement actions. Operation Called a Success Despite Controversy Homan described Operation Metro Surge as a success, even though it faced legal challenges and public criticism. The operation has sparked nationwide protests and intense debate. Two US citizens, Renee Good and Alex Pretti, died after federal agents shot them during enforcement actions. Their deaths remain a major point of concern for civil rights groups. Homan acknowledged that the operation was not perfect. He said federal agencies improved coordination by creating a clearer chain of command. He noted that the operation now runs more smoothly than before. Arrest Numbers Highlight Enforcement Impact Federal agents have arrested hundreds of individuals since the operation began. Homan said officers detained people accused of serious crimes. These include 14 individuals charged with homicide, 139 charged with assault, 87 registered sex offenders, and 28 alleged gang members. The BBC has not independently confirmed these figures. Homan said the goal of the operation was to remove dangerous individuals from communities. He stressed that public safety remains the administration’s top priority. Cooperation Led to Agent Reduction Homan took direct control of the operation at the end of January. At the time, he said federal staffing would depend on how much support local officials provided. On Wednesday, he said Minnesota authorities showed unprecedented cooperation. That cooperation, he said, led to the decision to cut the federal presence by roughly one third.

Routh pleaded not guilty and chose to represent himself during the trial, which began on September 8. His behavior in court was erratic, including references to Adolf Hitler, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and even challenging Trump to a golf game. Evidence Against Routh Federal agents recovered a semiautomatic rifle with a scope and extended magazine at the site where Routh had been hiding. They also found a list of places Trump was likely to appear and a note describing the incident as an assassination attempt. Although Routh never had a clear line of sight to Trump, prosecutors presented what they described as a “mountain of evidence” showing how close he came to carrying out the attack. Disturbing Court Behavior After the jury found him guilty, Routh attempted to stab himself in the neck with a pen. He was quickly removed from the courtroom by U.S. marshals. During his closing statement, he spoke in the third person and touched on unrelated topics, including U.S. history, the Russia-Ukraine war, and plans to buy a boat, prompting repeated interruptions from the judge. Previous Attempt on Trump’s Life This Florida incident was the second attempt on Trump’s life in 2024. In July, 20-year-old Thomas Crooks opened fire at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. That shooting left one person dead and several wounded, including Trump, and Crooks was killed by officers at the scene.

Steep Price Cuts and Market Pressure Novo Nordisk expects profits and sales to drop by up to 13% due to steep price reductions. The company said the situation worsened following a deal with US President Donald Trump to lower the cost of weight-loss drugs for Americans. Doustdar, appointed CEO last summer, said the price reduction for Wegovy is intended as an “investment for the future” and aims to make the drug accessible to more people. He warned investors that the share price could fall before it rises again. Rising Competition and Patent Expiry Weight-loss drugs like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Eli Lilly’s Zepbound and Mounjaro have grown increasingly popular. Competition has driven down prices, and patent expirations have allowed low-cost copycat drugs to enter the market. Some of these copies carry safety concerns. Novo Nordisk’s Chief Financial Officer, Karsten Munk Knudsen, highlighted that patents for semaglutide in India and China will expire soon. This is expected to increase competition, impacting group sales by around 2% this year. Knudsen emphasized that the company is “not in a race to the bottom” but aims to expand the market rationally. US Price Cuts Under Trump In the US, Trump sought to make weight-loss drugs more affordable, noting that prices there were higher than in other countries. In November, he announced the “most favoured nation” agreement with Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly. Under the plan, Wegovy and Zepbound users can expect prices to drop from $350 to around $250 per month, while Medicare prices for Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound will be $245. Many of these drugs previously cost over $1,000 per month without insurance. Novo Nordisk confirmed that lower realized prices, driven by the deal and market access investments, are factored into its reduced profit and sales guidance. Intensifying competition and patent expirations in some markets also weigh on performance. Eli Lilly Sees Gains On the same day, Eli Lilly’s shares rose after the company reported higher-than-expected profits and sales. Analyst Dan Coatsworth noted that Eli Lilly managed side effects from weight-loss drugs better than Novo Nordisk, giving it an advantage.
