How Can Football Lawmakers Fix Corner Kick Chaos in the Premier League? Corner kicks in the Premier League have turned into wrestling matches. Players push, grab, and block each other before the ball even drops. Goals from set pieces are rising, but so is frustration. Managers, referees, and fans now question whether football’s lawmakers need to step in. Growing Frustration Over Grappling at Corners Recent matches have highlighted the issue. During a clash between Everton and Manchester United, several Everton players crowded goalkeeper Senne Lammens. Leny Yoro ended up inside the net after being pushed, while Harry Maguire also became involved in the chaos. Everton manager David Moyes criticized referees for failing to act. He argued officials avoid making tough calls in crowded penalty areas. Other coaches share similar concerns. Arsenal have earned a reputation for mastering blocking tactics at corners. Moyes even described them as the best at using these so called dark arts, though he admitted they do it effectively. In Arsenal’s recent game against Chelsea, players visibly held opponents during set pieces. Chelsea conceded twice from corners in that 2 to 1 defeat. Is the Premier League Threshold Too High? Statistics show the trend clearly. Around 27 percent of goals in the Premier League this season have come from set pieces. That is higher than Serie A, Bundesliga, La Liga, and Ligue 1. The league believes its foul threshold sits at the right level. Before the season began, coaches, captains, referees, and pundits supported the current approach. Officials only punish clear and obvious holding, sometimes with VAR support. Still, many fans see players grabbing shirts while VAR checks tight offsides. That contrast fuels anger online. Possible Law Changes on the Table Some former officials suggest rule adjustments. One idea would allow referees to award penalties once they blow the whistle for a corner, even if the ball has not yet entered play. This change could stop early grappling. Another proposal requires attackers to start outside the six yard box before the kick. That would reduce crowding around the goalkeeper and create more space. So far, International Football Association Board has not prioritized this issue in its recent meetings. Lawmakers may view the problem as part of the natural evolution of tactics rather than a crisis. Who Should Take Responsibility? Coaches design these routines. Players execute them. Referees enforce the rules. Each group plays a role. However, as tactics grow more aggressive, enforcement becomes harder. Sixteen players can squeeze into a small area during a single corner. Referees must track multiple holds at once. That task tests even experienced officials. If the game’s image continues to suffer, lawmakers may have little choice but to act. Until then, corner kick chaos looks set to remain part of the Premier League story.

Israeli Strikes in Gaza Kill 20, Including Children and Paramedic Gaza City, February 4, 2026 – Israeli air and tank strikes in Gaza have killed at least 20 Palestinians, including several children and a paramedic. Nearly 40 more people were injured, local hospitals reported. The Israeli military said its forces targeted "terrorists" who had fired on troops in northern Gaza, seriously wounding an officer. The strikes took place near the Yellow Line, beyond which Israeli troops are stationed, and violated a three-month-old ceasefire with Hamas. Meanwhile, Hamas described the attacks as a "pretext to continue killing and aggression against our people." Children Among the Victims Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City received 13 bodies, including five children, after strikes hit tents for displaced families and nearby homes in the eastern Zeitoun and Tuffah neighborhoods. Abu Mohammed Haboush, a mourner at the hospital, said, "Our children were martyred – my son, my brother’s son, and daughter. We are peaceful people and had nothing to do with fighting." In Khan Younis, Nasser Hospital treated four dead, including a child, after strikes hit tents in the southern Qizan Rashwan area. Later, two sisters, Rahaf and Remas Abu Jamea, and paramedic Hussein al-Samiri died in the coastal al-Mawasi area. Paramedic Killed While Helping Victims Jihad al-Hinnawi, a first responder from Hamas-run Civil Defence, said Samiri ran to help victims of an earlier strike on a tent. Then a second strike hit the same location, killing him. The Palestinian Red Crescent condemned the attack and called it a "grave violation" of international humanitarian law, which protects medical personnel. Similarly, the International Committee of the Red Cross said it was "unacceptable" for first responders to face life-threatening risks while performing humanitarian work. IDF Targets Hamas Commander The Israel Defense Forces said their strike in al-Mawasi targeted Bilal Abu Assi, a platoon commander of Hamas’s elite Nukhba forces. They alleged he led attacks on Kibbutz Nir Oz and held hostages. The IDF added that it took measures to protect civilians but acknowledged that some, including medical personnel, were hit. Recent Escalations in Gaza On Sunday, more than 30 people died in Israeli strikes after gunmen emerged from a tunnel in southern Rafah. Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry reports that Israeli fire has killed at least 556 people so far. In contrast, Israel reports that four of its soldiers have died in Palestinian attacks. The war began after Hamas attacked southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing around 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages. Israel responded with a military campaign in Gaza. Since then, over 71,820 people have died in the territory, according to Gaza’s health ministry.

Crown Princess’s Son Testifies in Oslo Court Marius Borg Høiby, 29, son of Norway's Crown Princess Mette-Marit, struggled to hold back tears while giving evidence at his rape trial in Oslo. He admitted he led a lifestyle of excessive partying, drugs, and alcohol to cope with a deep need for validation. During his testimony, Høiby appeared visibly shaken, pausing several times to remove his glasses and wipe his eyes. He said it was extremely difficult to speak in court, adding that the media had followed him relentlessly since he was three years old. Allegations of Sexual Assault The trial follows accusations from four women, one of whom claimed she was drugged at a party in December 2018 at Høiby’s parents’ home. She said police later showed her videos allegedly depicting Høiby assaulting her after consensual sex. All women involved in the case are protected by court orders, which ban media from revealing their identities. The court has also prohibited photos of Høiby inside the courthouse or while arriving or leaving. Høiby Opens Up About His Lifestyle Høiby told the judges he was primarily known as “Mamma’s son” and that his personal struggles were rarely understood. He admitted to years of substance abuse and attending numerous parties. “I am known for being Mamma’s son. Nothing else,” he said, recounting the pressures of growing up under public scrutiny. Despite bringing notes, he rarely looked down while speaking for half an hour. Background and Arrest Høiby’s trial coincides with scrutiny of his mother, Crown Princess Mette-Marit, for exchanging messages with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The royal palace confirmed she postponed a private trip amid the controversy. Høiby was arrested in August 2024 after a violent incident at his girlfriend’s flat, where he allegedly threw a knife, damaged property, and abused her verbally. Following a lengthy investigation, he was charged with multiple offences, including rape, assault, threatening behavior, drugs offences, and driving violations. If convicted, he could face at least ten years in prison. Courtroom Appearance On the second day of the trial, Høiby appeared in a dark blue sweater over a beige shirt. He focused on the judges and did not glance at the alleged victims seated nearby. He recounted meeting one of the women at a party in 2018, admitting he had taken cocaine for the first time that night.
