Three Killed After Mount Dukono Volcano Eruption in Indonesia Deadly Eruption Hits Mount Dukono During Hiking Trip At least three hikers lost their lives after Mount Dukono erupted on Friday morning in Indonesia. The volcano sent a huge column of ash nearly 10 kilometers into the sky, creating panic among hikers and nearby residents. The victims were part of a group of 20 hikers from Singapore and Indonesia who were climbing the volcano despite safety restrictions issued by local authorities. Rescue teams later evacuated the remaining members of the group and shifted them to nearby hospitals for treatment and medical checks. Officials confirmed that two Singaporean men, aged 27 and 30, died in the incident along with a local woman from Ternate. Rescue workers have not yet recovered the bodies because continuous eruptions and dangerous terrain are slowing the operation. Rescue Operation Faces Major Challenges Local police and rescue teams said strong volcanic blasts and falling ash have made it difficult to reach the crater area where the victims are believed to be located. Authorities temporarily stopped the recovery mission after nightfall and plan to continue the search on Saturday morning. Two porters from the hiking group stayed behind on the mountain to support rescue workers during the operation. Witnesses near the volcano reported that Mount Dukono continued releasing hot ash and volcanic material throughout Friday afternoon. A local resident helping rescuers said ash clouds and rocks were still coming out from the crater area for several hours after the eruption. Officials remain concerned because the volcano has shown continuous activity in recent months. Authorities Had Already Warned Hikers Indonesian authorities had repeatedly warned people not to climb Mount Dukono because of increased volcanic activity. The volcano has erupted more than 200 times since March last year, making it one of the country’s most active volcanoes. One hiking guide present during the eruption said pressure inside the volcano had likely been building for several days. He described Friday’s eruption as extremely powerful and dangerous. Eyewitnesses also reported that several other hikers were on the mountain when the eruption happened. Officials are now investigating how visitors managed to enter the restricted area despite safety warnings. Indonesia’s Volcano Risks Remain High Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region known for frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The country has more than 120 active volcanoes, and authorities regularly monitor volcanic activity to reduce risks for local communities and tourists. The latest Mount Dukono tragedy highlights the dangers of ignoring official safety warnings near active volcanoes. Rescue operations are expected to continue until all victims are recovered from the mountain.

German Tourist Wins Refund After Sun Lounger Struggle in Greece Family Awarded Compensation Over Poolside Sunbed Problem A German tourist has received compensation after struggling to find a sun lounger during a family holiday in Greece. The court ruled that the holiday experience failed to meet reasonable expectations because guests regularly reserved loungers with towels for long periods. The tourist travelled to the Greek island of Kos with his wife and two children in 2024. According to court reports, the family woke up at 6:00 AM every day to search for available loungers near the pool. Despite their early efforts, they still could not secure seats because many guests had already reserved them using towels. The man explained that he spent nearly 20 minutes each morning looking for empty loungers. In some cases, his children had to sit or lie on the ground because no poolside space remained available. The family paid more than €7,000 for the package holiday. After returning home, the tourist filed a complaint against the tour operator. He argued that the company failed to properly manage the hotel’s sunbed policy and did not stop guests from reserving loungers for hours without using them. At first, the travel company offered the family a partial refund of €350. However, a district court in Hanover later ruled that the compensation was too low. Judges decided the family deserved a larger refund of €986.70 because the holiday conditions were “defective.” The court also stated that although the tour operator did not directly manage the hotel, it still had a responsibility to ensure guests had fair access to basic facilities such as poolside loungers. The issue of “sunbed wars” has become increasingly common at popular tourist resorts across Europe. Many holidaymakers reserve loungers early in the morning by placing towels on them before leaving for hours. Last year, several viral videos from Tenerife showed tourists rushing to claim poolside spots at sunrise. Some visitors were even seen sleeping beside pools to secure better locations. Travel companies and resorts are now trying different ways to solve the problem. Some hotels have introduced time restrictions on towel reservations, while others remove unattended belongings after a certain period. Meanwhile, some regions in Spain have warned tourists that they could face fines of up to €250 for reserving sun loungers and leaving them unused for long periods. Why Sun Lounger Disputes Are Increasing Tourism experts say overcrowded resorts and limited poolside seating continue to create frustration among travellers during peak holiday seasons. Families often expect relaxing pool access as part of their vacation package, especially when paying premium prices for resort stays. As more travellers share complaints online, hotels and tour operators may face increasing pressure to improve resort management and enforce fair sunbed rules.
