The "F", a swear word. The "O", standing for "OFF". The "H", short for "HOME". The acronym was described in a 2018 resignation letter from another member of staff, now seen by BBC Panorama, raising concerns about attitudes within the unit. In the same letter, another midwife was reported to have advised colleagues to get pregnant women, who had arrived worried they were going into labour, to go home with the advice: "Don't be too kind, she'll keep coming back." The Nottingham trust is currently at the centre of the largest maternity inquiry in the history of the NHS - looking at care provided to about 2,500 families between 2012 and 2025. The inquiry has been investigating stillbirths, neonatal deaths, maternal deaths, and injured babies and mothers at NUH, which runs City Hospital and Queen's Medical Centre.

He said the national threat level in DR Congo is now considered “very high,” while the regional risk across Africa remains “high.” However, the global risk is still classified as “low.” According to health officials, 82 Ebola cases have already been confirmed in DR Congo, including seven confirmed deaths. Rare Ebola Strain Creates Concern The Bundibugyo strain of Ebola worries experts because researchers have limited tools to fight it. Unlike other Ebola types, this rare species does not yet have a proven vaccine. Ebola is a dangerous viral disease that usually spreads from infected animals to humans. Uganda Monitoring Situation Closely Health officials also confirmed two Ebola cases and one death in neighbouring Uganda. Authorities said both infected individuals had recently travelled from DR Congo. Syphilis infections also rose sharply, reaching 45,557 confirmed cases during the same year. The number has more than doubled over the last decade. Medical experts warn that untreated sexually transmitted infections can lead to serious health problems. Gonorrhoea may cause infertility and chronic pelvic pain, while syphilis can damage the heart, brain, and nervous system if left untreated. Congenital Syphilis Cases Raise Concern Health officials also highlighted a worrying rise in congenital syphilis. This condition occurs when an infected mother passes the disease to her baby during pregnancy. Cases of congenital syphilis nearly doubled between 2023 and 2024. The report also showed that men who have sex with men remain the most affected group, with the fastest long term increase in infections. At the same time, syphilis cases among heterosexual women of reproductive age also increased significantly. Chlamydia Remains the Most Common STI Although chlamydia remained the most commonly reported bacterial sexually transmitted infection in Europe, cases slightly declined. Authorities recorded 213,443 chlamydia cases in 2024, representing a 6% decrease since 2015. Meanwhile, the United Kingdom continues to monitor its own sexual health data separately after Brexit. According to the UK Health Security Agency, England reported 71,802 gonorrhoea cases and 9,535 syphilis cases in 2024. The country also confirmed 168,889 chlamydia diagnoses during the same period. The UK introduced a gonorrhoea vaccination programme in 2025 after infection rates reached record levels in previous years.
