The G7 foreign ministers met in Canada on Wednesday, pledging to intensify pressure on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine while strongly backing President Trump’s ceasefire plan for Gaza aimed at ending hostilities and securing the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas.
In their joint statement, the ministers reaffirmed their commitment to Trump’s Gaza peace initiative and voiced alarm over restricted humanitarian aid reaching Palestinians. A US-brokered truce between Israel and Hamas has been in effect since October 10, but progress on the plan’s second phase has stalled.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who hosted the talks in Niagara, was joined by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, who called for enhanced missile support and energy infrastructure aid as Ukraine faces another harsh winter under attack.
The ministers also discussed concerns about US military actions in the Caribbean, where Washington has reportedly carried out 19 strikes on suspected drug-trafficking vessels, killing at least 76 people. Several European leaders questioned whether these actions breach international law.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot condemned the operations, saying they “violate international law” and threaten French territories in the region. Similarly, UN experts have warned that such lethal force in international waters could amount to extrajudicial killings.
Reports also indicate the UK has stopped sharing intelligence with the US over concerns about the legality of the strikes, while Colombia suspended intelligence cooperation until the attacks cease.
Meanwhile, the G7 ministers reaffirmed a shared commitment to maritime security but made no direct reference to the controversial US campaign.
On the Ukraine front, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said discussions focused on forcing Russia toward peace by raising economic pressure. She noted that US assessments show Moscow remains unwilling to negotiate genuinely.
Canada also announced new sanctions targeting Russia’s drone and LNG sectors and its shadow fleet. Ukraine’s Sybiha praised the move, stressing that sanctions must continue to “raise the cost of war for Putin.”
Efforts to arrange a Putin-Trump peace summit remain frozen after Moscow refused an immediate ceasefire, clouding hopes of ending the war soon.
