The statement came after renewed military tensions and continued U.S. economic pressure on Iran. Qatar and other regional mediators are also pushing for a return to diplomacy.

Why it matters Renewed talks could affect regional security, sanctions, the conflict and shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran Signals Willingness to Resume Talks

Pezeshkian said Tehran could quickly respond if Washington returns to its commitments under the memorandum of understanding.

The Iranian president made the statement at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Bishkek. Iranian officials have described the earlier agreement as an important step toward reducing hostilities and restarting negotiations.

Iran’s position, however, comes with conditions. Tehran wants the United States to restore the commitments it says Washington failed to maintain.

U.S. Pressure Remains a Major Obstacle

Washington has continued its economic pressure campaign against Tehran.

On August 27, President Donald Trump said the United States was not holding talks with Iran. The administration also said it would continue economic pressure until Tehran agreed to meaningful negotiations.

The two sides also remain divided over the terms of any future agreement. Their disagreements include sanctions, Iran’s nuclear program and security around the Strait of Hormuz.

Military Tensions Complicate Diplomacy

Military action has added another obstacle to negotiations.

On August 30, U.S. forces struck Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island near the Strait of Hormuz. Iran later launched attacks against sites used by U.S. forces in the region. Reports from the time described the exchange as a major escalation after a period of relative calm.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard has also warned that it could change its military strategy and targets if the conflict escalates further.

Qatar Pushes for a Diplomatic Solution

Qatar has continued to support efforts to bring the United States and Iran back to negotiations.

Regional governments have also explored diplomatic contacts during the United Nations General Assembly in New York. U.S. officials have indicated that a meeting remains possible, although no formal meeting between Trump and Pezeshkian has been scheduled.

Iran Keeps Door Open Talks

Iran has signaled that it remains open to negotiations if the United States restores commitments linked to the earlier memorandum.

At the same time, military tensions and economic pressure continue to make diplomacy difficult. Regional mediation could provide another channel for talks, but the two governments still need to resolve major disagreements before negotiations can move forward.
