Next Gen Nissan LEAF Production Begins in Sunderland
Production of the next-generation Nissan LEAF has started in Sunderland, marking a major milestone for the UK electric vehicle sector. It is the first high-volume electric car to enter production in the UK since 2020.
Nissan has invested over £450 million in the Wearside plant to produce the new LEAF. This investment supports 6,000 direct jobs and thousands more in the supply chain. The project strengthens Sunderland’s role as a key hub for EV manufacturing.
Government Support and Industrial Strategy
Industry Minister Chris McDonald attended the launch, calling the production start a significant boost for the North East economy. The government sees the project as proof of the UK’s leadership in green automotive technologies.
The investment builds on the largest post-war funding into the UK car industry. Through the modern Industrial Strategy, the government has committed £4 billion to accelerate electric vehicle production. This includes funding for batteries, electric motors, power electronics, and plant upgrades.
Regional EV Supply Chain Pilots
As part of the Industrial Strategy, the government plans to cluster EV manufacturing in key growth areas. Alongside the LEAF launch, two new regional supply chain pilots will operate with the North East and West Midlands Metro Mayors.
These programmes fall under the DRIVE35 initiative. They aim to strengthen domestic production, boost supply chain resilience, and support the transition to zero-emission technologies.
Sunderland Gigafactory and Local Jobs
Battery maker AESC has opened a 12 GWh gigafactory in Sunderland. The facility will supply batteries for Nissan vehicles and create new jobs. Officials say this shows how investment can strengthen regional supply chains and generate economic opportunities.
Adam Pennick, Nissan Sunderland Plant’s Vice President of Manufacturing, highlighted the team’s skills and teamwork. He said the plant’s transformation demonstrates Nissan’s long-term commitment to electrification.
Benefits for Drivers
Drivers can save up to £3,750 on the new Nissan LEAF through the government’s Electric Car Grant. The scheme helps households switch to electric vehicles while supporting domestic manufacturing.
The UK automotive sector currently supports 133,000 direct jobs, with another 320,000 linked roles across the wider economy. Officials say continued investment in EVs is crucial for long-term growth and global competitiveness.
