However, not everyone was as lucky as Carr during the Los Angeles fires, which claimed 29 lives in all. Some of the victims had also disregarded evacuation orders in order to defend their houses, despite authorities' pleas for thousands of residents to go. The goals of Leverkus' group, which the British Columbian government does not formally recognize, underscore simmering tensions between those who enforce evacuation orders and those who disobey them in fire-prone areas. A man in the Village of Clinton was forced to be rescued by wildfire firefighters in British Columbia last week after he refused to leave his burning home. The minister in charge of disaster management in British Columbia reaffirmed in a wildfire update on Tuesday.

US Hotels Fear Weak World Cup Tourism as Bookings Fall Short Tourism expectations fail to match reality US hotels are worried the upcoming World Cup will not deliver the expected tourism boost. Many host cities are reporting lower-than-expected bookings, raising doubts about the event’s economic impact. A report from the American Hotel & Lodging Association shows demand is falling behind forecasts across most locations. The group represents more than 32,000 hotel properties and a large share of franchised hotels in the United States. Conflict between booking data and ticket sales The association says hotel demand does not match FIFA’s claim that over five million tickets have already been sold. It warns that the expected financial gains from the tournament could be lower than projected. Accusations over hotel room block bookings The report also criticizes FIFA for reserving large numbers of hotel rooms in advance. According to the association, this created artificial demand and pushed prices higher in early stages of booking. Later, FIFA cancelled a significant portion of those reservations. Hotel operators say this left gaps in availability and disrupted normal pricing patterns. FIFA has rejected these claims and does not agree with the criticism. Other factors behind weak demand Hotels say several issues are discouraging visitors. High ticket prices for matches are one concern. Expensive local transport and taxes are also adding pressure. Some operators also point to political tensions as another reason international travel interest has slowed. Economic outlook remains uncertain With lower bookings and mixed signals from ticket sales, the hospitality sector is now unsure about the World Cup’s overall economic benefit. Many hotels are preparing for weaker-than-expected revenue during the tournament period.

Russia Targets Ukraine’s Energy Infrastructure

Russia has launched a record number of ballistic missiles and drone strikes targeting Ukraine’s energy sector, President Volodymyr Zelensky said. The attacks hit power plants and infrastructure in Kyiv, Kharkiv, and other regions, causing what energy company DTEK called “the most powerful blow” this year.

Harsh Winter Adds to Civilian Suffering

The strikes came as temperatures dropped to -20C (-4F), leaving over 1,000 residential blocks in Kyiv without heating. A power plant in Kharkiv was damaged beyond repair, worsening the crisis. Zelensky accused Russia of using winter conditions to terrorize civilians and called on Ukraine’s allies to apply maximum pressure on Moscow.

Civilian Heating Facilities Hit

D Some of the targeted plants only supplied heating to civilians, not electricity. Under the Geneva Convention, attacks on civilian infrastructure may constitute a war crime. Each strike makes repairs harder and increases the risk of widespread blackouts.

Engineers Work Around the Clock

Teams of engineers from across Ukraine are working day and night to fix the damage. Despite their efforts, there are not enough workers to meet the demand. Residents report going days, and in some cases weeks, without heating.

Public Response and Resilience

Zelensky said he would sleep in a local school equipped with a generator to stay warm. He condemned the attacks, saying, “They are bombing civilians. They want us to freeze and die.” Several residential buildings were damaged, and falling debris caused fires and injuries as Ukraine intercepted some missiles and drones.

Previous Article China has officially banned hidden car door handles in electric vehicles due to growing safety concerns. The country is the first in the world to take this step. The move follows several deadly accidents where passengers could not open car doors during emergencies. The new rule mainly affects electric vehicles, hybrids, and fuel cell cars. These models fall under China’s new energy vehicle category. Safety incidents push regulators to act Chinese regulators acted after multiple serious crashes raised alarm. Two fatal accidents involving Xiaomi electric cars sparked major concern. Investigators believe power failures stopped the electronic door systems from working. As a result, passengers could not exit the vehicles in time. Hidden door handles became popular after Tesla introduced them. Many manufacturers later copied the design. While the handles improve appearance and airflow, they depend heavily on electricity. This creates a risk during crashes or power loss. New rules require mechanical door releases China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology now requires all passenger doors to include mechanical handles. This applies to both the inside and outside of the vehicle, except for the boot. Each outside door must include a recessed space large enough for easy access. The space must measure at least six centimeters by two centimeters by two point five centimeters. Inside the car, clear signs must show how to open the door manually. These signs must meet minimum size requirements so passengers can spot them quickly in emergencies. Deadline set for new and existing models The new rules will take effect on first January two thousand twenty seven. Car models already approved for sale will get extra time. Manufacturers have two additional years to update their designs and meet the standards. This gives carmakers time to redesign doors without pulling vehicles from the market. Hidden handles dominate the EV market Hidden door handles are common in China’s electric vehicle industry. Around sixty percent of the top one hundred best selling new energy vehicles use this design. The data comes from figures published by China Daily. Because China plays a major role in global car production, the ban could influence rules in other countries. Global impact and Tesla investigations Safety regulators in the United States and Europe are already reviewing similar designs. In November, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation into Tesla door handles. The agency received nine complaints related to Tesla Model Y vehicles from two thousand twenty one. In several cases, doors failed to open. Some owners had to break windows to rescue children trapped inside. European authorities are also reviewing whether to introduce similar safety rules. Students have received assurances from the state administration that they would receive justice. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Jharkhand is looking into the claims related to the test. Over a dozen individuals have been taken into custody. Additionally, after candidates questioned the selection process, investigators are looking into the involvement of a private organization that administered portions of the exam. The administration decided to cancel the exam in question and two others after negotiating with demonstrators on Sunday. According to reports, three JPSC members also quit. This followed the resignation of JPSC chairman L Khiangte on July 22. On Monday, he was taken into custody after being questioned during the inquiry.
