US Hotels Fear Weak World Cup Tourism as Bookings Fall Short Tourism expectations fail to match reality US hotels are worried the upcoming World Cup will not deliver the expected tourism boost. Many host cities are reporting lower-than-expected bookings, raising doubts about the event’s economic impact. A report from the American Hotel & Lodging Association shows demand is falling behind forecasts across most locations. The group represents more than 32,000 hotel properties and a large share of franchised hotels in the United States. Conflict between booking data and ticket sales The association says hotel demand does not match FIFA’s claim that over five million tickets have already been sold. It warns that the expected financial gains from the tournament could be lower than projected. Accusations over hotel room block bookings The report also criticizes FIFA for reserving large numbers of hotel rooms in advance. According to the association, this created artificial demand and pushed prices higher in early stages of booking. Later, FIFA cancelled a significant portion of those reservations. Hotel operators say this left gaps in availability and disrupted normal pricing patterns. FIFA has rejected these claims and does not agree with the criticism. Other factors behind weak demand Hotels say several issues are discouraging visitors. High ticket prices for matches are one concern. Expensive local transport and taxes are also adding pressure. Some operators also point to political tensions as another reason international travel interest has slowed. Economic outlook remains uncertain With lower bookings and mixed signals from ticket sales, the hospitality sector is now unsure about the World Cup’s overall economic benefit. Many hotels are preparing for weaker-than-expected revenue during the tournament period.

Lauren Laverne Reveals Smouldering Myeloma Diagnosis, Says She Feels Well Television and radio presenter Lauren Laverne has shared that she has been diagnosed with smouldering myeloma, a rare blood and bone marrow disorder that can sometimes develop into blood cancer. Despite the diagnosis, she reassured fans that she currently feels well and does not need medical treatment. The 48 year old broadcaster explained that the condition has no symptoms in her case. Doctors will continue to monitor her health through regular blood tests, MRI scans, and bone marrow examinations. She also said that the chance of the condition progressing into blood cancer is considered low. A Condition Found During Routine Monitoring Lauren Laverne revealed that doctors discovered the disorder during routine medical monitoring following her previous cancer diagnosis. She said the condition is unrelated to her earlier illness or a recent surgery. According to Laverne, many people with smouldering myeloma never realize they have it because it often causes no symptoms. Cancer survivors are more likely to receive an early diagnosis because they usually undergo regular health checks. Living With a Chronic Blood Disorder Although there is currently no cure for smouldering myeloma, Laverne said she does not require treatment at this stage. However, she explained that the condition slightly weakens her immune system, making regular medical monitoring essential. She admitted that receiving another serious diagnosis within two years has been emotionally challenging. Even so, she remains positive and hopes that sharing her experience will encourage others facing similar health issues. Message About Early Detection Laverne praised her family doctor for investigating her ongoing low iron levels instead of dismissing them. She encouraged people to speak up about persistent health concerns and seek specialist advice if something does not feel right. She believes early diagnosis can make a significant difference and urged others to advocate for their own health by asking questions and requesting further tests when necessary. Taking a Short Break Before Returning The presenter said she plans to take a short holiday before returning to work as usual. She also sent her support to everyone living with similar conditions and thanked those who have supported her throughout her health journey. Her announcement has drawn widespread messages of encouragement from fans and colleagues, who wished her good health and a smooth recovery.

SpaceX requests FCC approval for solar powered satellite constellation to power AI data centers in orbit
SHARE

Elon Musk’s SpaceX has asked the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for permission to launch a massive satellite constellation designed to collect solar energy in orbit and use it to power AI data centers. The plan would place computing infrastructure in space, cutting reliance on land based power grids and reducing the environmental footprint of traditional data centers.

SpaceX Proposes Up to 1 Million Solar Power Satellites

In an FCC filing, SpaceX said it wants to launch as many as 1 million satellites that would orbit Earth and directly harness near constant solar energy.

SpaceX argues that satellites powered by continuous sunlight could deliver major advantages. The company says the system would lower operating costs and reduce maintenance needs compared to building and running data centers on Earth.

Project Could Support Musk’s AI Expansion Plans

The FCC request appeared just after reports that SpaceX and Musk’s AI company xAI are discussing a merger. A deal like that could strengthen Musk’s long term push to scale AI computing power and compete more aggressively with major players like:

  • Google
  • Meta
  • OpenAI

If the merger moves forward, it could also boost SpaceX’s goal of launching data center capacity into orbit ahead of a potential public offering.

The 1 Million Figure May Be Strategic, Not Final

Even though the filing mentions 1 million satellites, experts note that SpaceX may not actually launch that many.

Satellite operators often request approval for larger numbers than they plan to deploy. This gives them flexibility in future design choices and long term planning.

SpaceX previously requested permission for 42,000 Starlink satellites before starting deployments. Today, Starlink has around 9,500 satellites in orbit. In total, only about 15,000 satellites exist in space worldwide.

Starship Is Key to Making the Plan Possible

SpaceX’s proposal depends heavily on Starship, the company’s next generation reusable rocket. SpaceX believes Starship will dramatically lower launch costs and make large scale orbital infrastructure realistic.

SpaceX says reusable rockets could allow the company to send huge amounts of equipment into orbit every year. That would make it possible to build computing capacity in space faster than expanding data centers on land.

Starship has completed 11 test launches since 2023. Musk expects Starship to carry its first real payloads into orbit this year. The rocket also plays a major role in expanding Starlink with larger and more capable satellites.
