One former chef says he was detained on his way home and forced into service because he could not show ID. Another man recalls being picked up after a late-night karaoke visit. A third says he was arrested while working in the forestry sector. A fourth claims he was falsely accused after drugs were planted in his belongings, leading to his forced enlistment. Training and harsh conditions The men say they were given basic training for around four months before being sent to the front lines in Karen state. They describe strict routines, little rest, and heavy workloads placed mainly on conscripts rather than regular troops. They also say they were sent into active conflict quickly and had very limited time to adjust or recover. Life in the camps, they explain, was physically exhausting and tightly controlled. Escape and capture by rebel forces During a brief moment of movement away from camp, the group decided to escape. They were later found and detained by members of a local resistance group. Since then, they say they have been treated more fairly and with respect. They describe the experience as being treated like comrades rather than outsiders. They also say returning home is too dangerous. They fear being tracked or arrested again, so plans are being made to move them toward the border with Thailand for safety. Wider impact on the conflict Forced recruitment has become a key factor in changing the balance of the conflict. The military, which took control in 2021 after removing the elected government and detaining its leader Aung San Suu Kyi, has expanded conscription to strengthen its ranks. The civil war has caused widespread destruction, killing thousands and displacing millions across the country. After earlier advances by resistance groups and ethnic alliances, many of those gains have now been pushed back in several regions. The situation continues to shift, with fighting still active across multiple fronts.
