Myanmar Leader Visits Thailand

Min Aung Hlaing, the military commander of Myanmar, has made his first official visit to Thailand since initiating the coup that toppled Aung San Suu Kyi’s civilian government in 2021.

The coup sparked a civil war that destroyed the economy and claimed thousands of lives.

Due to his involvement in the mass expulsion of Muslim Rohingyas in 2017, Min Aung Hlaing was already subject to sanctions. Since then, he has been shunned by western nations and charged with crimes against humanity.

After an election that was widely denounced for being neither free nor fair, he was proclaimed president in April and resigned as military leader.

There was no voting, and participation by the major opposition parties was prohibited.

Thailand Reengages Myanmar Military Regime

Due to his unwillingness to execute a five-point accord that he and other ASEAN member nations agreed to in 2021. Min Aung Hlaing has been prohibited from attending ASEAN meetings.

The Myanmar military had to begin talks with opposition parties and defuse the situation.

Several Asean nations, including Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

Before full diplomatic communication can be resumed, they want to see the military in Myanmar make additional concessions to alleviate the humanitarian catastrophe and put an end to the civil conflict.

But because of their shared 2,400-kilometer border, Thailand is seeking what it refers to as “calibrated re-engagement” with the Myanmar state.

Thailand Welcomes Myanmar Leader

Thailand’s diplomatic engagement this week is moving quickly and seems to be going as planned.

Anutin Charnvirakul, the prime minister of Thailand, welcomed Min Aung Hlaing on the red carpet. in an attempt to improve trade ties between Thailand and Myanmar.
In addition to seeing the leaders of both houses of the Thai parliament, he will host a business conference and an official dinner.

The two presidents released a joint statement on Thursday night that rarely touched on the civil turmoil and shamelessly overlooked Asean’s reservations over Myanmar’s contempt for the 2021 accord.

The top priorities were resolving border issues and reestablishing business relations, which is what the Thai business community wants.

Thailand Expands Myanmar Security Ties

There were numerous references to security cooperation, which is something that the Thai military, which has a big say in Thai policy toward Myanmar, desires.

There is no indication in the statement that Thai people are worried about the catastrophic costs of the civil war.

Journalists were informed by Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow that Thailand wants to see less violence and a willingness to negotiate on both sides of the dispute.

Min Aung Hlaing has been shunned on a global scale. They were accused of crimes against humanity and came from Western nations.

Thailand Faces Myanmar Visit Criticism

Soon after Min Aung Hlaing was elected president, both acknowledged the new administration and extended invitations for formal visits.

China has played a crucial role in helping Myanmar’s struggling military government turn the tide on the war and retake some of the territory it had lost to armed opposition groups.

However, a lot of people are criticizing Thailand, a democracy and one of Asean’s founding members, for giving Min Aung Hlaing such a prominent visit.

The advocacy organization Justice for Myanmar stated, “The Thai government continues to give the junta false legitimacy through its ongoing diplomatic engagements.

“Thailand’s failing strategy of “calibrated re-engagement” with the military regime, which would only prolong the continuing conflict, is reflected in Min Aung Hlaing’s visit.
