Air India Appoints New CEO
As the airline faces growing difficulties, including as significant financial losses and the aftermath of the tragedy that claimed 260 lives last year, Air India has named a new CEO.
Campbell Wilson, whose resignation in April is changed by Tewolde Gebremariam.
Gebremariam formerly served as CEO of Ethiopian Airlines. Where he oversaw the company’s expansion into one of Africa’s biggest airlines for more than ten years.
After being acquired by the Tata Group from the Indian government in 2022, Air India has been going through a period of operational instability.
Gebremariam was unanimously selected by Air India’s board following a thorough search, the airline said, noting his operational know-how and leadership to guide the “next phase of growth” of the company.
Chairman of Air India, N Chandrasekaran, said: “Having completed the initial phase of stabilisation, integration, and fleet commitments under Campbell’s guidance. Air India is now entering a critical execution and expansion era.”
Air India CEO Faces Challenges Ahead
Gebremariam, his successor, has stated that he is eager to create a “world-class global airline” that “reflects India’s extraordinary economic potential.”
Gebremariam was credited with making Ethiopian Airlines the most profitable airline in Africa and virtually tripling the company’s fleet during his time there.
On the other hand, Gebremariam has a difficult job at Air India. He takes over as the airline struggles with a number of operational and safety issues.
Chief among them was the deadly Ahmedabad-London tragedy in June of last year. That was a significant blow to its aspirations. October is the deadline for the final crash report.
Since going back to private hands last month, it reported a record loss of around $2.3 billion (£1.7 billion). A comeback may take up to ten years, according to Chandrasekaran.
Can Air India Recover Under CEO?

Air India has stated that specifics would be revealed later. But it has not stated when he will take over.
