Poll Numbers Paint a Mixed Picture
President Donald Trump recently claimed on social media that he is enjoying the strongest poll numbers of his career. He argued that Americans support what he describes as a strong country and a thriving economy.
However, national surveys tell a different story as he prepares to deliver his State of the Union address.
A recent Fox News poll shows Trump with a 44 percent approval rating, while 56 percent disapprove of his job performance. An ABC News survey conducted with The Washington Post and Ipsos found his approval rating even lower, at 39 percent among adults and 41 percent among registered voters.
When averaging major polls over the past month, Trump’s approval remains in the low 40s. Disapproval sits in the mid 50s.
Strong GOP Support, Sharp Partisan Divide
Trump began his second term with slightly positive numbers. Since then, his ratings have slipped into negative territory and gradually declined.
Polls highlight a clear partisan gap. Republicans continue to back him in large numbers. Independents tend to disapprove, while Democrats overwhelmingly oppose his performance.
Veteran Republican pollster Daron Shaw noted that Republican support has stayed steady, but Democratic opposition has hardened.
Economy Remains Central Issue
Inflation concerns helped Republicans regain the White House and Senate in 2024 while holding the House. Trump has argued that inflation has improved under his leadership. At a recent event in Rome, Georgia, he said record inflation is no longer a problem and promised to address the economy during his speech.
Still, polling suggests that voters remain uneasy about economic conditions. In fact, Trump’s approval on the economy slightly trails his overall approval rating.
Many Americans say the country is not moving in the right direction. Surveys show continued pessimism about costs and affordability.
Midterms on the Horizon
With just over eight months until the midterm elections, control of Congress is at stake. Republicans hold narrow majorities in both chambers.
Trump’s political team recently met with Cabinet members and advisers to sharpen their message. According to those familiar with the meeting, strategists stressed that affordability will dominate voter concerns.
Meanwhile, Democrats argue their recent election gains stem from focusing on cost of living issues.
Despite mixed national numbers, Trump remains highly influential within his party. Republican leaders see him as key to energizing core voters who may otherwise skip midterm elections.
Republican National Committee Chair Joe Gruters called Trump the party’s secret weapon, saying no one motivates the base more effectively.
As Trump heads into his State of the Union address, public opinion remains divided. His base stays loyal, yet broader national approval continues to lag.
