Parliament approves major constitutional change in Zimbabwe

Parliament approves major constitutional change in Zimbabwe Zimbabwe’s lower house of parliament has approved a constitutional amendment that could significantly reshape the country’s political system. Lawmakers voted to extend presidential and parliamentary terms from five years to seven years. More than 200 members supported the bill, easily passing the two thirds majority needed for constitutional change. The proposal now moves to the senate for final approval before it can become law. Key changes in the amendment The bill introduces several major reforms. It removes direct presidential elections. Future presidents would be chosen by parliament instead of voters. It also extends both presidential and parliamentary terms to seven years. Parliamentary elections scheduled for 2028 would shift to 2030. If fully implemented, the changes would allow Zimbabwe’s current leader, Emmerson Mnangagwa, to remain in office until 2030. His second term was expected to end in 2028. Strong political debate over the reform The ruling party, ZANU PF, has supported the constitutional changes. The party has governed Zimbabwe since independence in 1980. Opposition groups, civil society organizations, and legal experts have strongly criticized the move. They argue that such a major shift should be decided through a public referendum rather than parliament alone. Legal and constitutional concerns Zimbabwe’s 2013 constitution limits presidents to two terms. It also states that any extension of term limits should be approved by voters in a referendum. Critics say the current amendment challenges those safeguards. A legal case aimed at stopping the bill was dismissed by the Constitutional Court, allowing the process to continue. Political background Emmerson Mnangagwa came to power in 2017 after the removal of long time leader Robert Mugabe with military support. He later won elections in 2018 and 2023, both of which were disputed by opposition parties. Supporters of the reform say the changes could improve stability and continuity. Critics warn it could reduce democratic accountability and weaken electoral choice.

More than 200 members supported the bill, easily passing the two thirds majority needed for constitutional change. The proposal now moves to the senate for final approval before it can become law.

Key changes in the amendment

The bill introduces several major reforms.

Strong political debate over the reform

The ruling party, ZANU PF, has supported the constitutional changes. The party has governed Zimbabwe since independence in 1980.

Opposition groups, civil society organizations, and legal experts have strongly criticized the move. They argue that such a major shift should be decided through a public referendum rather than parliament alone.

Legal and constitutional concerns

Zimbabwe’s 2013 constitution limits presidents to two terms. It also states that any extension of term limits should be approved by voters in a referendum.

Critics say the current amendment challenges those safeguards. A legal case aimed at stopping the bill was dismissed by the Constitutional Court, allowing the process to continue.

Political background

Emmerson Mnangagwa came to power in 2017 after the removal of long time leader Robert Mugabe with military support. He later won elections in 2018 and 2023, both of which were disputed by opposition parties.

Supporters of the reform say the changes could improve stability and continuity. Critics warn it could reduce democratic accountability and weaken electoral choice.

Previous Article Trial Confirmed in France Morocco captain and Paris Saint Germain defender Achraf Hakimi will face trial in France after prosecutors confirmed the case will proceed. French authorities say the case involves an allegation from 2023, when a 24 year old woman accused him of rape at his home in Paris. An investigating judge ordered the trial in February 2026 after a long legal process that started in March 2023. Hakimi has denied all accusations from the beginning. He recently lost an appeal to stop the trial from going ahead, according to French media reports. Hakimi Responds Publicly Hakimi spoke on social media and rejected the allegations again. He said he has waited for years to present his side in court. He also claimed the case has affected his family and reputation. He added that he believes the justice process will allow him to speak openly and clear his name in court. Complainant Legal Position The lawyer for the woman involved said the court decision brings relief after years of legal proceedings. She said her client now has the chance to be heard properly in court. She also said the trial may support wider efforts to address sexual violence and challenge denial in professional sport environments. Football and World Cup Context Hakimi remains part of the Morocco national squad Morocco national football team and is expected to lead the team in upcoming matches. Morocco are currently playing World Cup fixtures in the United States. There are possible travel complications depending on where matches are held, since the tournament is co hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Earlier in the tournament, Thomas Partey missed a match after being denied entry to Canada while facing separate legal charges. Career Background Hakimi made his international debut in 2016 at the age of 17. He played a key role in Morocco reaching the World Cup semi finals in 2022, the first African team to do so. At club level, he joined Paris Saint Germain in 2021 and has won multiple trophies, including major European titles during his career.
