The listings were discovered and removed after being reported by the charity that manages the database. Technology Minister Ian Murray informed MPs that the issue was flagged on Monday, and immediate action followed. Authorities confirmed that no evidence so far suggests any data was purchased. What data was involved Officials clarified that the exposed dataset did not include direct personal identifiers. It did not contain names, home addresses, phone numbers, NHS numbers, or full dates of birth. However, the dataset did include sensitive health and demographic details such as: Age range and birth month and year Gender Socioeconomic background Lifestyle information Biological and health measurement data Even without direct identifiers, experts note that such detailed health profiles still require strong protection due to potential privacy risks. Response from UK Biobank UK Biobank stated that it is actively investigating the incident and working with UK and Chinese authorities, along with Alibaba, to understand how the listings appeared. Chief Executive Professor Sir Rory Collins reassured participants that the data remains de identified and cannot directly identify individuals. He also acknowledged that participants may still feel concerned about the situation. Government and regulatory reaction The government described the situation as a serious breach of trust in how sensitive research data is handled. Officials stressed that organizations have a legal duty to secure medical information properly. The Information Commissioner’s Office also confirmed it is reviewing the case. It emphasized that medical data is highly sensitive and must be protected under data protection laws. What makes UK Biobank important UK Biobank is one of the largest health research databases in the world. It was created using volunteer data collected between 2006 and 2010 from people aged 40 to 69. Debate Over How the Ban Should Work During a session in Parliament, Early Education Minister Olivia Bailey said current measures are enough to enforce strong restrictions on phone use in schools. She argued that the system already supports effective bans. However, Shadow Education Secretary Laura Trott agreed with the idea of a ban but questioned how it would be applied. She raised concerns about “not seen, not heard” policies. According to her, such approaches often fail to stop distractions in classrooms. Schools Already Testing Strict Policies Some schools have already introduced their own rules. Rob McGinty, headteacher of Hollingworth Academy in Rochdale, said his school follows a “no see, no hear” policy. Even so, he believes a full ban could work better. Challenges in Enforcing a Ban McGinty pointed out a key issue. Even with strict rules, phones can still be hidden in bags or pockets. Notifications can still tempt students to check their devices. He said schools need clearer guidance to manage these situations properly. Delays in Final Decision The legislation is still being debated between the House of Commons and the House of Lords. This process is often called parliamentary “ping pong.” It continues until both sides agree on the final version. Time is becoming a concern for the government. Sri Lanka Launches Investigation After Cyber Theft of 2.5 Million Dollars Cyber fraud uncovered in sovereign debt payment system Sri Lankan authorities have started a formal investigation after hackers breached finance ministry systems and diverted 2.5 million dollars from a scheduled debt payment to Australia. Officials say the transfer was part of a bilateral repayment arrangement linked to a settlement planned for September 2025. The issue came to light only after the Australian side reported that the payment had not been received. How the money was diverted Investigators believe the attackers targeted the debt payment process by manipulating instructions sent through email communication channels. This allowed them to redirect funds into unauthorized bank accounts instead of the intended recipient. Authorities suspect the breach happened in January, but the discovery was delayed for several months. Officials also noted that the hackers attempted a similar manipulation during a later payment related to India. That attempt raised further suspicion and helped uncover irregularities in banking details. Government action and internal suspensions Harshana Suriyapperuma, secretary of the finance ministry, confirmed that four senior officers from the Public Debt Management Office have been suspended as part of the investigation.
