A serious health incident has unfolded aboard the MV Hondius, a small expedition cruise ship sailing near Cape Verde. Three passengers have died, and a British traveler remains in critical condition after doctors confirmed a hantavirus infection.
The ship, operated by Oceanwide Expeditions, was carrying 149 people when the situation developed. Authorities are now working with the company to assess the risk and manage the response.
What Happened on Board
The first passenger fell ill during the voyage and died on April 11. Medical teams could not confirm the cause at the time. When the ship later docked at St Helena on April 24, his body was removed.
His wife, who had already left the vessel, became sick during her return journey and later passed away. Officials have not confirmed a direct link between their deaths and the current outbreak.
On April 27, a 69-year-old British passenger developed severe symptoms. Emergency teams evacuated him to Johannesburg, South Africa. Doctors later confirmed he had a strain of hantavirus. He remains in intensive care but is stable.
A third passenger, a German national, died on board shortly after. The cause of death is still under investigation.
Crew Members Show Symptoms
Two crew members also reported respiratory symptoms. One case is mild, while the other is more serious. Medical teams have not confirmed hantavirus in these cases yet.
Health officials continue to monitor everyone on board. So far, no additional infections have been reported.
Understanding Hantavirus
Hantavirus is a rare but serious illness that usually spreads through contact with infected rodents. People can catch it by inhaling particles from rodent urine, droppings, or saliva.
In most cases, it does not spread between humans. However, it can cause severe lung infections and breathing problems, which may become life-threatening without proper care.
Doctors say there is no specific cure. Treatment focuses on managing symptoms and supporting breathing.
Health Response and Ongoing Investigation
South African health officials have begun tracing people who had close contact with the infected passenger. They aim to test and isolate any potential cases quickly.
The cruise operator described the situation as serious and confirmed that it is working closely with local authorities. Discussions are ongoing about the next steps for passengers and crew.
