Mass Funeral Held in Gaza

A mass burial for 112 people—mostly women and children—who were murdered in an Israeli strike on a residential block in late 2023, early in the Gaza war, drew sizable crowds to Gaza City.

Only recently, after a two-week operation, were the bodies—belonging to members of two extended families.

Before family members moved the bodies away, dramatic images showed.

According to reports, this is the largest funeral ever held in Gaza.I believe that this is a sense of suffering, loss, and sadness that was meant to be experienced.

112 Gaza Victims Finally Buried

Among the deceased from the Abu Sharia and Hassayna families, a single clan, were 44 children, 38 women, and seven individuals with disabilities.

On November 22, 2023, Israel struck a residential block in Gaza City’s Sabra neighborhood, killing them.

Six weeks after the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, which resulted in 1,200 fatalities and 251 hostages, it was a day of intense bombing.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have not yet responded to the BBC’s request for information on what was attacked.

The health ministry operated by Hamas claims that at least 73,377 individuals have died in Gaza since the conflict began.

ICRC Supports Gaza Victim Recovery Efforts

The Civil Defense, which works under the Hamas-run interior ministry, was responsible for the recovery efforts in Gaza.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has backed its efforts.According to ICRC spokeswoman Patrick Griffiths.

“We provide material support—literally the gloves, shovels, protective gear, and body bags they use.”In order to ensure that the deceased are treated with dignity.

We train them and assist them in doing their jobs safely and in accordance with professional standards.

Additionally, we have helped them by hiring two of the few excavators in Gaza that are suitable for this type of job for hundreds of hours.”

“Confirmation that your loved one has been killed is not an answer any family wants to receive,” Griffiths continued.

Families Recover Loved Ones From Gaza Rubble

“This multi-story structure has been leveled. Perhaps over 180 civilians were present.

At the time, Civil Defense spokesperson Mahmoud Basal stated that the majority of them—roughly 90%—were killed.

The Civil Defense workers were unable to access the location on the day of the attacks because it required coordination [with Israel via a third party like the ICRC] and getting there was extremely risky.”

While the recovery workers worked, the deceased’s relatives were present to provide guidance.

After the incident, they claimed to have recovered as many dead as they could and were relieved to be able to bury others properly.

Sole Survivor Mourns Family Loss

“The kids – what did they do?” he inquired, displaying two of his young relatives’ belongings.

“This was Ibrahim’s sneaker, and this was Omar’s school backpack. Why? “Why were they killed?

“Yousef Abu Sharia was close by and remarked, “I’m the only survivor of my family.”

“As the person who lost my mother, father, uncle, cousins, and entire family, I am speaking to you now. Under this debris, I lost them.”

Dozens more victims are reportedly still missing from the scene.

Thousands more individuals are missing throughout the Gaza Strip.

Many people’s corpses are believed to be beneath the debris caused by heavy Israeli airstrikes during the conflict.
