Jose Mourinho’s Benfica are close to finishing the season unbeaten, yet they have failed to win the Primeira Liga title.
With only two matches left, Benfica have not lost a single game. Still, their 10 draws have cost them the championship. In contrast, Porto secured the title after opening a nine-point lead at the top of the table.
Porto, led by president Andre Villas-Boas, have been consistent throughout the season. They lost just one of their 32 matches, which proved enough to stay ahead of Benfica.
Too Many Draws Hurt Benfica’s Campaign
Benfica’s unbeaten run highlights their defensive strength, but too many dropped points made the difference. They recorded six more draws than Porto, which allowed their rivals to take control of the title race.
If Benfica avoid defeat against Braga and Estoril Praia, they will complete an unbeaten season. However, this achievement may still end without a trophy.
This is not the first time the club has faced such disappointment. In the 1977–78 season, Benfica also went unbeaten but lost the title to Porto on goal difference.
Missed Chances and Costly Mistakes
Reports in Portuguese media suggest Benfica dropped 12 points from winning positions. They allowed leads to slip in six matches, which proved decisive in the title race.
Their latest setback came in a 2–2 draw against Famalicao. That result ended their realistic hopes of lifting the trophy.
Club president Rui Costa criticized the refereeing decisions after the match. He claimed a penalty was wrongly awarded and questioned the corner that led to the equalizer.
Costa stated that such decisions should not influence the outcome of a championship. His comments may lead to disciplinary action from refereeing authorities.
Mourinho Linked With Future Moves
Mourinho also expressed frustration with officiating during the season. He said the match reflected the broader issues Benfica faced in the campaign.
Despite missing out on the title, Mourinho’s work has attracted attention. He has been linked with a possible move to Real Madrid if changes occur in the summer.
At the same time, Benfica are preparing to offer him a new contract, showing confidence in his leadership.
Can Benfica Still Finish Strong?
Benfica must stay focused in their final two matches. They could still finish second, but Sporting CP remain close behind with a game in hand.
An unbeaten season would still be a rare achievement in European football. However, missing the title will leave a sense of what could have been.
