Political dispute over defence priorities

A disagreement has emerged over how the UK funds its military. Two outgoing defence ministers have accused the prime minister of not providing enough resources to keep the country secure. This has triggered wider debate over whether current spending matches growing security risks.

The government spends about £66 billion on defence. This supports the armed forces and the nuclear deterrent. Officials argue that the UK remains well protected due to its geography, strong alliances, and capable military forces.

Rising concerns about global threats

Supporters of higher spending say the security environment is changing quickly. The focus has shifted from militant groups to tensions between states such as Russia and Iran. This shift has increased pressure on defence planning and funding.

Officials warn that modern conflict now relies more on fast production of low cost weapons, drones, cyber systems, and space technology. Traditional ships and armoured platforms are seen by some experts as less effective if they cannot adapt quickly.

Long standing issues in defence planning

Critics say defence challenges go beyond current political disagreements. They point to long term problems in how the Ministry of Defence manages equipment procurement. Projects have often faced delays and higher costs than expected.

Past governments reduced military spending after the Cold War. Spending did not rise enough as global tensions increased. As a result, the size of the army, navy, and air force has gradually reduced.

Internal disputes within government departments have also slowed decision making. These tensions have involved the Treasury, the Ministry of Defence, and senior political offices.

Pressure from international commitments

The United States has also increased pressure on European allies to take more responsibility for their own defence. NATO members are expected to meet agreed spending targets, adding further urgency to the debate in London.

Government spending plans

The UK currently spends about 2.3 percent of national income on defence. Labour has said this will rise to 2.5 percent next year. It has also pledged to work with allies toward a target of 3.5 percent of national income by 2035.

The prime minister has defended recent decisions, saying the world has become more dangerous and uncertain. He has also said the government will need to increase defence spending faster in the years ahead.

Previous Article One Dead and Several Injured in Midland Texas Shooting Incident Overview of the Incident A shooting in Midland, Texas left at least one person dead and several others injured. Authorities said the attack triggered a rapid police response in the southwestern area of the city. Emergency teams reached the scene shortly after the first distress calls came in. Officers reported hearing gunfire coming from inside a building, which led to an immediate containment operation. Police Response and Suspect Status Police quickly moved in with SWAT support and other agencies to control the situation. Officials confirmed that the suspect is now dead and the incident has been brought under control. Local authorities stated that there is no ongoing threat to the public. The investigation is still active, and officials have not released details about the suspect. Casualties and Medical Treatment Officials confirmed a total of eleven people were affected, including the person who died. Midland Memorial Hospital received nine victims. Four of them are currently undergoing surgery, while others remain in stable condition. One additional victim was taken to another medical center in Odessa for treatment. Medical teams continue to monitor the injured patients, and updates on their conditions are expected as care continues. Statements from Local Leaders Midland Mayor Lori Blong expressed deep sorrow over the incident. She shared sympathy for the victims and their families and thanked emergency responders for their quick action. Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick also reacted to the shooting. He offered prayers for those affected and praised first responders for protecting the community during the crisis. Next Article People who were groomed and sexually abused as children, then later prosecuted for crimes linked to exploitation, are still facing long term harm. A major report author says the current government response does not fully address the scale of wrongful convictions and needs a broader approach. Background of the issue A senior investigator who led a national inquiry into grooming exploitation cases has raised concerns about the way past convictions are being handled. She previously urged authorities to cancel convictions of victims who were punished for offences committed while they were being abused. The government has introduced a law aimed at pardoning certain prostitution related offences involving children. However, critics say this step is too limited and does not address the wider group of survivors affected by similar convictions. Concerns over the current approach The investigator described the current policy as an easy solution that avoids deeper action. She argues that a proper system should be created to review and cancel all convictions that were influenced by child sexual exploitation. She believes the existing process lacks care and structure, leaving many survivors without justice. In her view, the response so far has not met the needs of those affected. Government response Officials say they will continue working on reviewing convictions where a person’s childhood abuse may have influenced criminal behaviour. They also encourage affected individuals to contact the official body responsible for reviewing potential wrongful convictions. Survivor experience One survivor, using a protected identity, described how she was abused from a young age and repeatedly exploited by many men across different locations. Despite being a child at the time, she was arrested multiple times and treated as an offender. She received her first conviction at 17 for offences linked to street solicitation. At the time, she did not understand what was happening to her and was labelled in court as a sex worker. Years later, she recognises she was being exploited and raped throughout that period. She says the system failed to protect her and instead punished her for actions linked to abuse. Survivors of grooming cases say conviction review plan does not go far enough
