From Dublin Office Work to International Football
Roberto Lopes once worked in an office job in Ireland while playing part time football. He later left his routine job after a full time opportunity came from Shamrock Rovers, a club in Dublin. This decision changed the direction of his life and opened the door to professional football.
He previously played in the League of Ireland while also working as a mortgage adviser. At that time, football was not his main career. He was focused on office work and balancing sport on the side.
Discovery Through LinkedIn Message
Lopes received an unexpected message on LinkedIn from Cape Verde national team coach Rui Aguas. The coach found him through his family background, as Lopes’ father is from Cape Verde, a group of islands in the Atlantic Ocean off West Africa.
At first, Lopes ignored the message. He thought it was spam and did not reply. Months later, the coach followed up again and asked if he had considered joining the national team.
When Lopes checked the message properly using translation tools, he understood the opportunity clearly. He then responded with interest and excitement about representing Cape Verde.
Joining Cape Verde National Team
After accepting the invitation, Lopes became part of the Cape Verde national squad. He quickly established himself as a regular player and has represented the team for several years.
His international career began in 2019 when he first appeared for the Blue Sharks. Since then, he has remained an important part of the squad and contributed to their progress on the international stage.
World Cup Dream Becomes Reality
Cape Verde has now reached its first World Cup appearance, a historic moment for the nation. Lopes is expected to play a key role in the team as they prepare to face strong opponents including Spain in the group stage.
For Lopes, the World Cup represents the highest level of football achievement. He has spoken about how every young player dreams of reaching this stage. Now he is living that dream while representing both his family and his heritage.
Personal Milestone During Career Peak
Alongside his football success, Lopes also experienced a major personal milestone. He became a father shortly after Cape Verde secured World Cup qualification. He described the moment as deeply meaningful and emotional, adding further importance to this stage of his life.
A Journey of Change and Opportunity
Lopes’ story reflects how unexpected opportunities can change a career. From working in an office job in Dublin to playing on football’s biggest stage, his journey highlights determination, timing, and openness to new paths.
He continues to play club football for Shamrock Rovers while representing Cape Verde internationally, balancing both club and country commitments.
