Texas Governor Greg Abbott has announced a state level investigation into the fatal shooting of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo by federal immigration agents in Houston. The decision comes after growing public pressure for an independent review of the incident and increasing concerns about how immigration enforcement operations are being carried out.
Governor Orders State Investigation
Speaking to reporters, Abbott confirmed that the Texas Rangers will work alongside federal investigators to determine exactly what happened during the operation.
The governor said immigration laws should be enforced while also protecting human life. He stressed that border security efforts should not result in unnecessary shootings.
His comments followed calls from local leaders and community members who wanted an investigation separate from the federal government’s internal review.
Fatal Shooting During Traffic Stop
The incident happened on 7 July when ICE agents stopped Salgado Araujo as he drove to work in Houston. Officers shot him during the encounter, and emergency crews transported him to a nearby hospital. He later died from his injuries.
Authorities have not released video footage of the shooting. According to Congresswoman Silvia Garcia, the agents involved were not wearing body cameras during the operation.
Questions Remain Over What Happened
ICE first claimed that Salgado Araujo used his vehicle as a weapon, forcing an officer to fire in self defense.
Later, the Department of Homeland Security said agents had actually stopped the wrong person. Officials explained they believed the driver matched the appearance of another individual they wanted to locate.
The agency admitted Salgado Araujo was not the original target of the operation.
His family strongly rejected the official version of events. They continue to demand full transparency and an independent investigation into the shooting.
Family Calls for Accountability
Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was 52 years old and had lived in the United States for about 35 years. According to his family, he was raising three children and was working toward obtaining legal residency.
His son, Ronaldo Salgado, said he first learned about the shooting through videos shared on social media. He recognized his father’s voice as he called for help after being shot.
Later, he received confirmation of his father’s death through news reports.
Ronaldo also said his father was travelling with three other men, including his uncle. Immigration officers detained them after the shooting.
Federal Investigations Continue
The Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General has opened an investigation into the fatal shooting. At the same time, the FBI’s Houston office is investigating the reported assault on a federal law enforcement officer connected to the incident.
Officials have released only limited details so far. As both state and federal investigations continue, the Salgado family and community leaders are calling for clear answers and greater accountability.
The Texas investigation adds another layer of scrutiny to a case that has drawn widespread attention. With key questions still unanswered and no public video available, investigators will face growing pressure to establish a complete account of what happened during the fatal ICE operation.
