Religious gatherings often bring together thousands of people in search of hope and spiritual guidance. However, a large prayer event in Burundi ended in tragedy after a deadly crowd crush claimed several lives and left others injured.
Eight People Die in Crowd Crush at Burundi Prayer Event
Eight worshippers died and nine others suffered injuries during a large evangelical gathering in Bujumbura, the largest city in Burundi. The incident happened late on Saturday night after thousands of people attended a prayer meeting led by well known Burundian preacher Chris Ndikumana.
According to eyewitnesses, the crowd rushed toward the exit as the event came to an end. During the movement, part of the wall near the exit gate collapsed, creating panic among worshippers. Many people fell while others became trapped in the crowd.
Several people were unable to escape as the pressure from the crowd increased. Emergency teams quickly arrived at the scene and transported the injured to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Hospitals Confirm Deaths and Injuries
Police confirmed that six victims died at King Khaled Hospital in Bujumbura. The victims included five women and one man. Medical staff treated four injured people at the same hospital.
Two additional victims died at a military hospital, where doctors also treated five injured worshippers.
Authorities reported that only two injured people showed visible physical wounds. Most victims had no major external injuries, leading investigators to believe that suffocation caused the majority of the deaths.
Thousands Gathered for the Prayer Meeting
Chris Ndikumana leads the Kanguka Ministry and regularly attracts large crowds during his religious gatherings across several African countries. His online sermons have also gained significant attention, with more than one million subscribers following his YouTube channel.
Many followers believe his prayers can bring healing and comfort to people facing serious illnesses and personal challenges.
Neither the preacher nor the event organizers had released a public statement about the tragedy at the time of reporting.
Crowd Safety Remains a Growing Concern
Deadly crowd crushes have occurred at several religious events across Africa over the past few years.
In 2020, at least 20 people lost their lives during a religious gathering in neighboring Tanzania after worshippers rushed forward to receive blessed oil.
A similar tragedy happened in Nigeria in 2022 when 31 people died during a church food distribution event in Port Harcourt.
Later that year, another crowd crush in Liberia killed at least 29 people, including 11 children, after attackers disrupted a large evangelical gathering.
The latest incident in Burundi highlights the importance of stronger crowd management, better emergency planning, and safer exit arrangements at large public events to help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
