UEFA Threatens World Cup Boycott
If Fifa moves forward with its intention to sell interests in its competitions to private investors, the 55 member associations of Uefa have decided to boycott World Cups.
The European football governing body, Uefa, had expressed its objection to the plans in two scathing comments, and it has now reiterated how strongly it feels.
If Fifa president Gianni Infantino’s plans are approved by member associations. The boycott would apply to all Fifa tournaments, including the men’s and women’s World Cups and Club World Cup.
World Cup Is Not For Sale
This position will be put to the test for the first time in October when the Women’s World Cup play-offs are scheduled.
Uefa and its 55 member associations “stand as one” in a statement issued following the meeting.It said.
“We categorically and unequivocally reject Fifa’s proposal to give private investors ownership interests in the World Cup and other Fifa competitions.
“One cannot consider the World Cup to be an investment product.
It is among the greatest sports legacies of football. Players, national teams, and supporters from every continent have created it over many generations.
Private investors should never be given any portion of it. The World Cup cannot be purchased.
Infantino Pushes FIFA Investment Plan
In order to manage its major events, including as the World Cup, Fifa plans to establish a business subsidiary in which outside investors will be allowed to purchase shares.
In a letter to all 211 Fifa member associations. Infantino promised them $40 million (£30 million) if they supported his contentious proposal to sell out shares in the organization’s biggest events.
The Swiss gave football federations until September 19th to approve his ideas in order to get an initial $20 million (£15 million).
