Who is involved NFL teams, players, media companies, lawmakers and fans.
Current status The new season is beginning amid major debates about media, expansion and the future of the league.
Why it matters Media costs, international growth and team performance could shape the NFL's future.

1. NFL Media Deals Face Greater Attention

Watching every NFL game could become more expensive for fans in 2026.

The league continues to work with major streaming platforms. Companies such as Netflix and Amazon use NFL games to attract subscribers and advertisers.

That strategy has also attracted attention in Washington.

Reports have suggested that the Justice Department could examine the NFL’s media agreements. Critics argue that the league’s approach may limit competition and make games harder for fans to access.

Sen. Tammy Baldwin has introduced the For the Fans Act. The proposal would place new rules around how the NFL handles media agreements.

The central issue is simple. Fans want easier and more affordable access to games.

2. NFL Faces New Culture Debate 10 Years After Kaepernick

2026 marks 10 years since Colin Kaepernick began kneeling during the national anthem.

His protest brought national attention to racial inequality, police brutality and political expression in professional sports.

The NFL later increased its focus on diversity and inclusion. Yet the subject remains controversial among fans.

The league has only three Black head coaches heading into the season. Former coach Brian Flores has also continued his legal battle against the NFL. His lawsuit alleges that teams have not properly followed the Rooney Rule.

Kaepernick is also expected to publish a memoir this month. His book could bring renewed attention to his relationship with the league and the wider debate over race in American sports.

3. NFL Expands Its International Reach

The NFL is continuing its push beyond the United States.

The league plans a record nine international games across seven countries during the 2026 season. The schedule includes games in Melbourne, Paris and Rio de Janeiro.

American football still trails soccer in global popularity. However, the NFL has gained interest in markets such as England and Germany.

Streaming services have helped fans outside the United States follow NFL teams more easily.

A successful international season could encourage the NFL to expand its overseas plans.

4. Washington Commanders Chase Success and a New Stadium

The Washington Commanders enter another important season.

The franchise has undergone major changes in recent years. Josh Harris bought the team, while quarterback Jayden Daniels quickly became one of the league’s most exciting young players.

The Commanders also continue to pursue a new stadium at the former Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium site.

The proposed project could cost more than $3 billion. Local officials and team leaders still face questions about financing, transportation and the project’s effect on surrounding communities.

Washington will also host the 2027 NFL Draft on the National Mall, adding to the city’s growing connection with major sporting events.

5. The West Coast Could Produce NFL Contenders

The first major game of the season features a rematch of last year’s Super Bowl. The Seattle Seahawks face the New England Patriots in prime time.

Seattle isn’t the only West Coast team attracting attention.

The Los Angeles Rams are entering the season with strong Super Bowl expectations. Their roster includes several major defensive talents, including Aaron Donald, Myles Garrett and Trent McDuffie.

The Rams have adopted an aggressive win now approach. General manager Les Snead has built a roster designed to compete immediately.

The NFC West could become one of the NFL’s toughest divisions. The San Francisco 49ers also have the offensive talent to make a deep playoff run.

The 2026 Super Bowl will take place at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. That gives the Rams an additional reason to chase a championship on home ground.

Other Sports Stories to Watch

Several other sports stories could attract attention during the season.

The Los Angeles Angels have changed ownership after a sale involving Stan Kroenke. The Los Angeles Clippers have also faced major NBA penalties connected to their handling of the salary cap.

College football is facing its own legal battles. The Southeastern Conference has sued Louisiana State University and coach Lane Kiffin over alleged recruiting activity involving professional athletes.

Congress is also considering legislation aimed at college sports.

A View From Capitol Hill

Rep. Riley Moore, a Republican from West Virginia, shared his thoughts on sports.

Moore said college football is his favorite sport. He supports the West Virginia Mountaineers and believes the return of coach Rich Rodriguez could make the program more competitive.

He also named Michael Jordan and Bo Jackson as athletes he admired while growing up.

When asked which NFL team he likes to see lose, Moore pointed to the Dallas Cowboys.

What to Watch in the 2026 NFL Season

The 2026 NFL season will provide a closer look at how the league balances growth with fan concerns.

Media prices will remain an important issue. International games will test the NFL’s global appeal. Washington’s stadium plans will continue to attract political and business attention.

On the field, the Seahawks, Rams, 49ers, Bills and Ravens are among the teams worth watching.

The season could ultimately show whether the NFL can keep expanding while maintaining strong support from its core American audience.
