Three rounds of negotiations have been held between the longtime rivals in an attempt to reach an agreement on the program, which Tehran disputes and which the West claims is meant to produce nuclear weapons.
Oman is mediating the negotiations, which started on April 12 and represent the two sides’ highest level of communication in years.
Following a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi declared, “The next round of negotiations will take place in Rome.”
According to the top diplomat, representatives from Britain, France, and Germany—all signatories to the 2015 nuclear agreement—will also meet with Iranian officials on Friday.
When Washington withdrew from the agreement in 2018, it collapsed. The agreement called for the easing of sanctions in exchange for reducing Iran’s nuclear activities.
