In a rare setback for Elon Musk’s potent satellite internet system, SpaceX’s Starlink experienced one of its largest worldwide outages on Thursday, taking tens of thousands of users offline due to an internal software malfunction.
Around 3 p.m. EDT (1900 GMT), users in the US and Europe started to experience the outage, according to Downdetector, a crowdsourced outage tracker that reported up to 61,000 user reports to the website.
After acknowledging the downtime on its X account, Starlink, which boasts over six million subscribers in about 140 countries and territories, stated that “we are actively implementing a solution.”
After two and a half hours, Starlink vice president of Starlink Engineering Michael Nicolls posted on X that Starlink service had largely returned.
